French GP Wrap Up
The French Grand Prix at Magny-Cours was the site of a package of upgrades for the RA107 that were hailed by many in the press as a 'RA107B' but called merely an upgrade package by Honda F1 personnel trying to downplay expectations. Still, many were looking forward to seeing Honda F1 take a step forward and they were rewarded...moderately.

Jenson Button was able to dice and fight his way up from 12th on the grid to finally score the first points of Honda F1's 2007 campaign.

Button was relatively chipper after the race as the team finally realized some significant improvement in their dreadful season:

"We knew that we hadn't moved forwards in qualifying but we showed in the race that we had. To finish six seconds behind the quickest Renault and not too far behind the BMWs is a good step forward, definitely. It's something that we can really build on for future races.

Going into the race, I thought there was a possibility for a point but I didn't expect to be so close to those cars. It's a great result for us - it's not where we wanted to end up but it's a step forward, which is what we needed."

Anthony Davidson got knocked out the race early but had some positive words about the way the season is going for Super Aguri, whom have already exceeded their expectations for this year.

British GP Wrap Up
The British Grand Prix at Silverstone was not a great weekend for the cars bearing the red 'H' but not totally disastrous either. While it was expected that Silverstone would be kinder to the RA107 than Magny Cours the results did not improve.

All through free practice the RA107's of Button and Barrichello were struggling outside of the top ten and qualifying did not go much better. For the first time this season Button was not able to make it out of Q1 and ended up starting from 18th spot on the grid. Barrichello did somewhat better, qualifying 14th.

In what could be called a shrewd marketing move and a small coup, Honda F1 team principal Nick Fry invited David and Victoria Beckham to the race as guests of Honda. This had the effect of stealing a little bit of the thunder of McLaren rookie superstar Lewis Hamilton, whose home race was met with an incredible British media feeding frenzy. Fry apparently figured, 'if you can't beat 'em, get a celebrity...'

David Beckham is managed by the same agency as Jenson Button so presumably that is how the connection was made.

Race Pace...Not Bad
While Honda was helped a bit by cars in front of them having problems they still ran a fairly fast pace and Button and Barrichello were able to advance 8 places and 5 places respectively. While Silverstone can't be called a step forward for Honda F1 by any stretch, it wasn't a step backward. It was a 'treading water' race as it were.

Button Considering Retirement?
After a disappointing home grand prix at Silverstone Button revealed in a post race interview that if he can't get to the front in the next few seasons he may just hang up his F1 helmet and go elsewhere.

"There will come a time when I get bored of finishing eighth," Button said. "I'm in this sport to win and I won't want to keep on finishing eighth at best, which is what I've achieved this season with Honda. To be honest, I'd find it too tough to handle. If this continues then maybe in a couple of years I'll just call it a day and go and find something else to do."

While it sounds rather dramatic it is really just Button's frustration with his results seeping out. He has been very positive and upbeat (much like us Honda fans) for most of the season but the lack of a significant change in fortunes has no doubt worn on the Englishman's spirits.

Interview with Super Aguri Technical Director
On a brighter note autosport.com interviewed Super Aguri's technical director, Mark Preston. He talked a bit about Super Aguri's goals coming into this season and the surprise success they've enjoyed as well as a little bit about how the team has been able to pack such a big punch for a small team.

Spa Test
All of the F1 teams came out for the 3 day test at the historic Spa circuit in Belgium. Honda's testing program for Spa was centered on chassis set-up and tires.

On day 3 it is not a typo, Honda's test driver Christian Klien was in fact testing the Spyker Ferrari. Klien is looking to take the race seat vacated by Christijan Albers who has been given the mid-season axe. It's not clear who would fill Christian Klien's shoes as a tester at Honda but perhaps one of the young guns in GP2 could fit the bill.

Shocker! USGP Not Returning to Indianapolis in 2008
In the Indianapolis Star today it was divulged that Formula 1 will not be returning to Indianapolis next year. Bernie Ecclestone, the commercial rights holder of F1, and Tony George, the owner of Indianapolis Motor Speedway, could not agree on the terms of having the race in 2008. Apparently Bernie wanted IMS to pay an even bigger sanctioning fee (reports peg the asking price at $20 million) in order for them to host F1 and Tony George did not think it economically feasible to do so.

The door is apparently open for the event to return in 2009 but who knows if that will come to fruition. The manufacturers will certainly want to be back in the United States but it is not clear if they can bring any sort of pressure to bear on Ecclestone to bring back a USGP.

American Le Mans

The 5th round of the American Le Mans series visited the Lime Rock Park circuit in Lime Rock, Connecticut. The 1.53 mile circuit is the shortest road course in the United States to host professional racing and in a three hour race that means drama. There were several full course cautions during the race, one of which was caused when the lead Audi R10 had a spectacular off that landed the car into a tire wall.

The fastest LMP2 cars again turned in faster laps than even the mighty Audi R10 LMP1. The two Penske Porsches and the Andretti Green Racing Acura were the only cars to post a fast lap in the 45 second range.

However the AGR car was unable to take full advantage of its speed during the race and unfortunately the Lowes-Fernandez car suffered a right rear suspension failure on the bumpy circuit and was not able to finish.

The Highcroft Acura however faired quite a bit better and was able to overhaul the Dyson Porsche RS Spyders to take third place but did not have the outright pace to catch the factory Porsches of the Penske team.

Speed World Challenge Touring

Mosport Wrap Up
Peter Cunningham returned to the top step of the podium at Mosport and Pierre Kleinubing took third to give Acura its first win in the 2007 season. Kuno Wittmer finished in 5th place to give Realtime 3 cars in the top 5. The two Acura pilots are still many points adrift of the leading Mazda but with this win they can begin taking some bites out of that lead.

Check out Realtime's Press Release for more info on the race. Be sure to watch the race on Speed Channel on July 14th at 11:00 am EST.

Koni Challenge

Hondas Dominate at Watkins Glen
Hondas and Acuras took 4 out of the top 5 at the Watkins Glen round of the Koni Challenge championship (formerly known as Grand Am Cup). Koni Challenge is somewhat like Speed World Challenge except that the cars are built to a lower spec and the championship consists of mostly 3 hour endurance races with a few longer races thrown in for good measure.

The first in class car was the Kensai Racing TSX, followed by the Honda of America Racing Team's Accord V6. HART is made up entirely of Honda employees, even down to the drivers, much like the Team Honda Research West team that competes in the NASA Endurance series.

Taking 4th and 5th place were the two Acura RSX's of Fenton Motorsports. The Fenton team has been a long time stalwart of the class, much like HART and is a perennial power in the series.

NASA Endurance

Team Honda Research West (THR-W) Scores Another Podium
The THR-W team finished third in class and sixth overall at Willow Springs Raceway in the Western Endurance Racing Championship (WERC) three hour endurance race. The podium finish for the THR-W #27 Acura RSX type S driven by Sage Marie and Matt Staal moved the team into second place in the WERC season standings. The second THR-W entry, driven by Sam Poznanovich and R.J. Martinez finished sixth in class and twenty-first overall. At the halfway mark of the season THR-W is only five points out of the team championship lead. The next WERC series race will be held on October 13, 2007 at Buttonwillow Raceway Park in Buttonwillow, California.

One also can't help but to notice the snazzy new livery.

Moto GP

Dutch TT at Assen
Nicky Hayden said after the race at Assen:

"On the warm-up lap I was thinking this is by far the best my machine has felt all year in any conditions and, even though I'd qualified in 13th, on the line I just remember thinking, 'fight like a dog today boy!' "

Fight like a dog he did as Nicky Hayden pulled a tremendous hole shot from the 5th row and went from 13th to 5th in the first corner and 4th by the second corner. He was briefly pushed back to 5th position but was able to pick off Yamaha's Colin Edwards and later Suzuki's John Hopkins to earn a well-deserved podium. He and Dani Pedrosa ran together in a tidy train until late in the race when Pedrosa's tires went off and he dropped off the pace but still finished 4th.

Nicky finished 4 seconds behind Ducati's Casey Stoner and had the pace to take second had he not qualified poorly. Valentino Rossi went from 11th to 1st in the race and pulled a comfortable 2 second lead on Stoner. Nicky probably would not have caught Rossi based on Rossi's pace but a podium was a great result to finally break the string of bad results in 2007.

Assen was not a good race for the rest of the Honda contingent, much the same as it was at Donington. All of the satellite riders will have to wait until the Czech GP at Brno where they will all receive significant updates to their RC212V's from HRC.

Miguel Duhamel to Sub for Elias at Laguna
It was recently announced that Miguel Duhamel of the American Honda superbike team will be replacing the injured Toni Elias for the 2007 Red Bull US Grand Prix at Laguna Seca. Miguel will be pulling double duty as he will also be racing his CBR1000RR in the AMA superbike race.

Duhamel is the winningest rider in AMA history (his wins span several classes) and has taken several victories at Laguna over the years. Duhamel also did a stint in Grand Prix racing in 1992 but was unable to find a ride for the following season.

Fausto Gresini, the owner of the Hannspree-sponsored Gresini Team had this to say of Duhamel:

"Duhamel is an experienced rider," said Gresini, "he knows the Laguna Seca track very well and we think it is a great opportunity for an American rider to race in this important event for the media and the spectators. Duhamel will race in both the MotoGP and AMA races on Sunday at Laguna, he is enthusiastic about this challenge."

Michel Fabrizio of the DFXtreme Honda team in World Superbike will be replacing Toni at this weekend's race at the Sachsenring in Germany

Elias trying to return by Brno
In yet another entry in the 'Motorcycle Racers are Masochists' chronicles, Toni Elias is planning to come back early from his broken femur to race again at the Czech GP at Brno on August 19th. It is a very tall order for the small Spaniard but many before him have pulled such super human comebacks and it will be quite an accomplishment if Toni can indeed make it back so quickly.

Second USGP set for 2008 at Indianapolis Motor Speedyway
It is all but official that Indianapolis Motor Speedway will host a round of the Moto GP championship in 2008 in addition to the 2008 round that will be held at Monterey, California's Laguna Seca Raceway. IMS is expected to make their formal announcement on July 16th on the heels of the shock announcement that Formula 1 will not be returning in 2008.

The additional good news is that the Moto GP race at Indianapolis will feature the 125 cc and 250 cc GP classes (they don't race at Laguna). For those that like intense multi-bike battles (on weedwhackers with wheels) the Moto GP support classes will be a real treat.

Johnny Rea Takes the Double at Knockhill
Rea put on a masterful performance at the Knockhill circuit in Ireland taking pole position and double flag-to-flag wins in treacherous wet conditions. From the moment the green flag dropped in each race Rea never looked back and was never challenged. As if Rea's double was not impressive enough, he was actually suffering with a knee injury sustained while mountain biking that required minor surgery after the race. He should be totally fit for the next round at Oulton Park.

Here is an interview with the budding star by MCN

Rea's teammate Ryuichi Kiyonari finished on the podium in both races and retains the championship lead. Rea has leapfrogged into second place, usurping Airwaves Ducati's Gregorio Lavilla who crashed in Race 2.

AMA Superbike

Hodgson to ride Corona Honda at Laguna
In another wildcard ride, Neil Hodgson will be riding a Corona Honda CBR1000RR in the AMA Superbike at the 2007 Red Bull US Grand Prix.

Neil is a very accomplished rider having won championships in British Superbike and World Superbike and also doing a stint in Moto GP. Neil raced on the factory Ducati AMA Superbike team in 2005 and 2006 before that team abruptly pulled out of the championship leaving the former WSBK champion with nowhere to go (since all of the good rides in the various superbike series had already been taken).

In 2007 he has been doing motorcycle racing odd jobs. The Isle of Man (home of the Isle of Man TT) resident has been tire testing with Bridgestone and Ducati in Moto GP and he did a one-off test for Rizla Suzuki in British Superbike to help them get their bike sorted out.

In the Knockhill British Superbike broadcast one of their commentators said that Hodgson couldn't ride for full-time Rizla Suzuki because he had signed with Corona Honda. Does that mean Neil was signed to do more than just a one-off ride at Laguna? Could he already be signed to Corona for 2008? Neil has made no secret of his desire to avenge his relatively unsuccessful stint in the AMA championship on an uncompetitive factory Ducati in 2005 and 2006, so perhaps he will be back here full time next year.

Soichiro's Heroes

Johnny Rea
With 2 consecutive poles and 3 consecutive victories Rea's streak of success keeps on running. Rea now trails his teammate Ryuichi Kiyonari by a mere 11 points in a Honda rider 1-2. HM Plant Honda has gone through 2 riders in the past 2 seasons trying to find a competitive teammate for Kiyonari and in Rea they have found a fantastic rider who is every bit his equal. Rea and Kiyonari will now be heading to Oulton Park, and on to Japan for the prestigious 8 Hours of Suzuka.

Peter Cunningham
After winning the Speed World Challenge Touring championship last season the first win of 2007 was a long time coming for the Realtime team owner and 4-time World Challenge champion. Now that the account has been opened for wins in 2007 for Realtime, Peter, Pierre and Company can step up their title defense campaign.

Nicky Hayden
It would be a gross understatement to say that Nicky Hayden has been having a terrible title defense season up to this point, notching a best finish of only 7th before the Dutch TT. But what got Nicky his title in the first place was his tenacity and extreme work ethic and at Assen he was rewarded with his first podium of the year. Nicky's home grand prix is less than two weeks away, with this strong result hopefully he can use the momentum to take his third victory in a row at Laguna Seca.
