- What is this new moderation system?
This moderation system is based on slashdot.org's moderation system. It allows moderators to score messages and readers to filter out these messages based on a viewing threshold.
- What do the scores mean?
Each message gets a score from -1 to 6. A high score means that the moderators thought your post had some useful content. A low score (below 1) means that the moderators thought that your message departed from the spirit of the forum rules.
The default score is (1). All new messages start at that score with the exception of users who have above or below average posting histories. Users who have above average message scores start with a default new message score of (2) and users who have below average message scores start with a default new message score of (0).
- What do the score words mean?
Each time a moderator scores a message, they choose a word to explain why they are moderating the message in a particular direction. The moderation word from the last moderator who scored your message shows up next to your message's total score.
- How do I change my viewing threshold?
You can go to the Garage to change your viewing threshold. You can also set the viewing threshold by using the text boxes in the forum index pages, the message pages, the news item detail page or the last page of an article.
When you change your viewing threshold, you filter out messages below that threshold. In the flat message view, the filtered message is replaced with a link to the message. The title, author, and body of the message is not displayed. If you want to view the filtered message, click on the link provided in the thread. The fancy/simple thread modes operate in a similar manner except that the system removes the title link and replaces it with a link to view the message in the thread list.
- Where should I set my viewing threshold?
The system default viewing threshold is (1) as is the default new message score. Setting the number higher will filter out the noise in the forums, but setting it too high may screen out useful messages which haven't been scored yet. Setting your threshold to (2) or (3) is a good place to start and you can adjust the threshold as necessary.
- Isn't this censorship?
No. You can still view the messages. We're just providing a way for users to easily filter out the noise in the forums. If you want to view all of the flames, set your viewing threshold to (-1) and enjoy.
- I don't agree with my message score, can I get it reviewed?
Yes, but in general, our moderators monitor almost all messages in the forum. If they see a message which was incorrectly moderated, they will notify the site admin and/or try to rectify the situation by moderating the message higher.
- What happens if I reply to a message that has a low score?
You score will start at the parent message's score. If you are responding to a flame, it's probably not useful, so don't do it.
- What happens if I reply to a message that has a high score?
Nothing. Your default new message score stays at (1) if you have a neutral average message score, (0) if you have a below average message score, and (2) if you have an above average message score.
- Can I see my average message score?
Yes. Go to your Garage, scroll down to the "Privacy Settings" section and click on the link there. This bring you to your public profile page
- How can I become a moderator?
At this moment, we have a select group of forum moderators. As our traffic increases, we will recruit more forum moderators. At some point, we will implement random moderator selection. Moderators will be chosen from the registered user pool who have an average message score above some predetermined threshold.
