Edmunds.com: Long-Term Test: 2003 Honda Accord

From the article:

Edmunds.com has added an Accord EX to their Long Term test fleet, expect an update with the editors opinions every month for the next year.

The Honda Accord is a perfect fit for our long-term program. It's consistently one of the Most Researched vehicles on our site, and it was the fifth best-selling vehicle in the U.S. in 2002, according to Automotive News, at 398,980 units. This put it behind the Toyota Camry, but a redesign for the 2003 model year should help the Accord make up some ground.

Although we've been known to favor loaded-up models (for our test fleet anyway), as they give us the greatest number of features to evaluate, our long-term Accord is quite sensibly equipped as midsize sedans go. It's an EX model with the five-speed automatic transmission. It doesn't have the V6, leather upholstery or the DVD-based navigation system. What it does have is an extremely clean-running 2.4-liter i-VTEC four-cylinder engine.

Editor in Chief Karl Brauer logged more positive comments: "The car is fast. Not fast for a four-cylinder but simply fast. I never felt like it was lacking in power, and considering the way I typically drive on my commute down Pacific Coast Highway, that's pretty amazing."

After passing the break-in period, we subjected the Accord to our standard battery of instrumented testing, where it managed an 8.8-second 0-to-60-mph run. This puts it in good company with family sedans, as we've timed the 175-horse Altima 2.5 S at 8.7 seconds. These numbers would be respectable for V6-powered sedans, a fact that says a lot about the capability of these four-cylinder engines.
