New V4 Superbike Rumors Gaining Steam

Rumors of a new V4-powered homologation special superbike have been floating around for years but recently they've been gaining steam and starting to pour out from multiple sources.

The main idea that lends credence to the rumor is that Honda will offer said superbike in order to take advantage of the new 2012 Moto GP rules. In 2012, teams will be able to use production-derived engines to power their Moto GP chassis, similar to how production-derived CBR600RR engines power Moto2 class machines now. The factory Honda team would probably still compete with a full-on prototype bike but privateer Honda teams could use the much cheaper V4 superbike engine in their custom chassis. It would also put some wind in the sails of teams like Ten Kate in WSBK.

In the 2nd link provided below Wayne Gardner (1987 GP500 champion Honda rider) states that V4 power is coming to the CBR1000RR but that is fairly unlikely. Chances are this new bike would supplant not replace the CBR1000RR, since in the past the RC45 and RC51 were both offered along side the big CBR.

If the rumors are true that this bike is meant as a base for claiming rules teams in Moto GP, then we should see it unveiled before the end of the year, unless Moto GP allows Honda to start racing with the engine before it's offered for sale to the public.
