Over the weekend, a report came out from Japan's Nikkei news service suggesting that Honda is currently developing a Battery-powered Electric Vehicle which will be sold in the US market.
Note that (Honda's previous CEO) Takeo Fukui had publicly scuttled any suggestions that Honda would develop BEVs for future sales, saying that Honda felt that BEVs were not a viable long term solution and that Honda's focus would primarily be on Hybrids and Fuel Cell-powered vehicles. The automotive landscape has been in a state of flux for the past few years, and the Obama administration has introduced new incentives and grants promoting BEV development, so it's quite possible that Honda has re-evaluated their former position.
We asked Honda representatives about this story and received the following (unsurprising) response.
...We are aware of this piece, and we can tell you that although electric
vehicles are one of the alternative technologies that Honda is conducting
research and development activities on, we have not made any decision about
plans for commercialization of this technology. In addition, we have not
yet publicly announced what we will be exhibiting at Tokyo Motor Show. We
traditionally release that information via a formal press release a few
weeks prior to the show.
