The Cerumo Toyota Supra of Takeuchi and Tachikawa won the 5th round of the All-Japan Gran Touring series. This is little surprise at the Fuji circuit which has traditionally favoured the grunt of the Supra. The leading Honda NS-X of Matsuda and Firman failed to gain any points while being doubly burdened by a high amount of penalty weight plus being at a circuit favouring the Toyotas. Luckily, the team is only 11 points down with 3 more favourable circuits left, Motegi, Miné and Suzuka. Remember, 20 points are awarded for first place, so the title is still wide open.
In GT300 news, the Honda powered Vemac team continues to struggle, as last year's champions were victorious. The Vemac 320 R uses the NS-X's V6 mounted mid-ship, but with a custom chassis. The Vemac team struggled with some mechanical difficulties after dominating their debut at round 2, also at Fuji. They had hoped the return to Fuji would also mean a return to form. In qualifying it appeared that might happen, as they grabbed pole. The race however lead to further dissappointment as they only managed 13th, a lap down from the winner.
