The IIHS has just released crash test results for their latest round of testing midsize sedans. This testing involved running an SUV sized barrier into the side of the vehicles at a closing speed of 31mph. Click the following link to view the report.
IIHS Report
Of 10 tested models, only the Accord EX (with side torso airbag and side curtain) and the Toyota Camry (also with optional side torso airbag and side curtain) earned "Good" marks in the test. With the exception of one model (Malibu, with side airbags), which was rated "Adequate", the rest of the tested models received "Poor" ratings. The models receiving "Poor" ratings included the Suzuki Verona, Mazda 6, Dodge Stratus/Chrysler Sebring, Nissan Altima, Saturn L Series, Hyundai Sonata/Kia Optima, Mitsubishi Galant, Honda Accord (no side protection) and Camry (no side protection).
These test results illustrate the benefits of active side impact protection systems. It should be noted that as part of their "Safety for Everyone" commitment, Honda has already announced that side impact protection will be standard on virtually every model by the end of calendar year 2006 (see related news article).
