SCCA SPEED World Challenge series Touring Car points leader Pierre Kleinubing finished the 50-minute race at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course 3.5 seconds out of the race win, in eighth position. He maintains a 17-point lead toward his fourth World Challenge season championship.
RTR Team leader Peter Cunningham finished in the 13th spot, 11.5 seconds behind the race winner. The remarkable fact about his climb through the field is that he started the race in 47th spot in the 51-car field, because of an engine-related problem in the RTR Acura Integra Type R early in Saturday's qualifying session, even before he had got the car up to competitive lap times.
"After our misfortune in qualifying, I knew that we were in for a challenging race, but starting back that far turned out to be nothing short of a blast," Cunningham said. "I'm happy it worked out that I didn't shove anybody out of the way to get it done. Almost all the drivers I passed were quite courteous, but the closer I got to the front the harder they were to pass. The safety car was on course three times, the first two benefited me, but the last one probably cost me two or three more positions. To have climbed from 47th place to 13th in the race was more fun than a barrel of monkeys."
In fact, SCCA Pro Racing awarded Cunningham the B&M Holeshot Award for safely picking up 12 positions on the first lap alone.
Kleinubing qualified the lead RTR Acura Integra Type R in ninth, and picked up one position in the race. "We had a right rear tire going down at the end, and had the race stayed green, we would have lost more positions. Finishing the race under the yellow allowed us to dodge a large bullet."
Teammate Fred Meyer qualified 43rd fastest in his RTR entry, and moved up ten positions to finish in 33rd place. "After failing to make the show at Lime Rock, he had the bit between his teeth and was looking very racy this weekend. He had one of the best weekends he's ever had," Cunningham added.
"Our Acura Integras didn't have the horsepower at a track like Mid-Ohio, and finishing in the top ten was the best we could hope for here."
Mid-Ohio's SPEED Touring Car race will be televised on the SPEED Channel, Saturday, July 13, at 8 p.m. EST.
