Japanese Supercars Delayed by Europeans?

A story appearing on the UK's Auto Express site suggests that the introduction of Japan's next round of supercars (such as the NSX and Skyline GT-R) has been delayed to some extent due to the staggering output of current European supercars.

The NSX in particular is said to be delayed until 2006. They go on to state that "Engineers have been ordered back to the drawing board to produce machines capable of matching their European rivals' huge output."

If I might step on the soapbox for a minute, I have to say that if the Japanese manufacturers have taken this long to reach this conclusion, it's more than a little surprising and certainly disappointing. 400+hp supercars have been around for more than a few years now.

The HSC is a great looking concept, and I'm sure there are prototypes running around with pretty startling performance figures, but you're not going to draw a lot of attention on the world supercar stage by launching with a concept that's advertised to have "more than 300hp". Since no mention of price was made, we have to assume it will be priced in the range of the current NSX, whose sales suffer from a market perception of being underpowered for the price. While reality can and does differ from perception, the NSX's current sales figures indicate that perception is apparently more important than reality. That said, the next NSX does not need to have 400+ hp, as long as the weight is kept low. 350hp or more in a car weighing 1250kg (2750 lb) or less should do the trick.
