"For years, Honda, Japan's No. 2 car maker, has been popular for its compact, efficient models like the Civic. Honda, which makes mostly small and midsize vehicles, doesn't sell full-size pickups or sport-utility vehicles and doesn't even offer a V8 engine like those in most big sedans. But with other companies' hulking SUVs clogging American roads these days, some consumers are starting to wonder if buying a tiny Honda is a big risk, especially if there's an accident.
To alleviate such concerns, Honda is pushing to build sturdier cars and installing safety devices in its midprice models that go even beyond what's available in the most luxurious cars from Mercedes or BMW.
Honda's latest safety technology, which it calls its "collision mitigation brake system," combines a range of sophisticated sensors into an automated back-seat driver. When the device senses impending collision, it nags and even nudges the person behind the wheel. It's designed to prevent a common type of accident -- a drowsy driver rear-ending the car in front of him."
