How has the website response times been for you in the last 3 days? We made a change recently and hope that it has fixed some of the server timeout problems we were seeing before. Tell us if you've noticed an improvement or if it's worse or the same.

Seems quicker. Pages loading up faster. I'm pleased with it, but I do have broadband.

I'm on a fractional T1.

Seems to take 3-5 seconds for do anything. Compared with something like Yahoo, this is v.e.r.y slow.

Compared with some other boards that I've been in/on/around it is just a little slower.

It is slower than the www.vtec.com was. I've been viewing (lurking) on it for several years now.

On my cable modem at home it's quite snappy most of the time. Occasionally it will pause for a brief second, and then everything will flash on the screen. But then that happens on just about every site I visit so i can't tell if it's something to do with my service provider or if it's our servers. Right now the servers are sitting behind about 100mbits of internet bandwidth, though apparently the situation will improve beyond that in the next 45 days or so when our hosting facility receives further upgrades.

At any rate, things should be 1000% better than they were just a week ago before we had our unexpected network outage. Gilbert has even more optimizations to be made to the underlying code, and we have an extra web server that's yet to be deployed, so between those factors this site should be really responsive for everybody. Of course it's going to be difficult to compete with Yahoo when they have hosting facilities all over the globe and serious edge caching of content. Their pages are 95% text too, while a lot of our bandwidth gets chewed up with photos and videos, but that's the nature of the content we provide.

Yeah, we're not yahoo! Not yet at least ;-) vtec.net has 1 webserver and 1 database server (and Tuan is still putting the large video files on the original vtec.net server). Both are dual processor machines. Our DB server is at 20% CPU utilization and the webserver will max out from time to time. You may be experiencing some latency, but I doubt that is the issue (traceroute and ping from California was under 100ms roundtrip).

Most likely, you're hitting pages which I have not optimized yet. Those are typically the index pages to each section of the site. Like Jeff said, we also have a second webserver ready to go. That will help us balance the load and improve response times.

To clarify, beta.vtec.net has 1 webserver and 1 db server so far. www.vtec.net is on a 3rd server, which will be retired soon, perhaps to be reincarnated with some new bits.

Oh, as another datapoint, I get 50-60ms roundtrip from here (ATL), even though it's 18 hops away.

I think I fixed the slow page loads. I had some poorly written SQL queries and some inefficient thread formatting procedures. Those resulted in the database server maxing out on CPU. We'll know whether the changes I made fixed the slow page load problem on Friday during the peak hours...

Over the past few days I was looking at a few of the more popular threads I did finally notice some pretty whack latency. Some of the other latency seemed to be par for the course because my stoopid laptop seems to page everything to/from disk now so no matter what site I hit there's inevitably some sort of lag. Today I spent some time on one of my desktop computer (which doesn't suffer the paging fate, thankfully!) and was surfing around other sites and I could DEFINITELY tell that our site was pretty latent, esp. when loading up the more popular threads (like the '03 Accord news item :O ). Now with the new optimizations things seem vastly improved, though as Gilbert says, I'll withhold final judgement until we go through peak hours tomorrow.
