"Faced with these costs, Honda's board of directors ultimately gave up on the idea of offering diesel technology in the US"

Next paragraph:

"Ito-san makes it very clear that Honda's position remains consistent. That position is the notion that Hydrogen is the long term solution, and they are dedicated towards working to that end" ...no matter what it costs!

If that's not an absolute contradiction of philosophy,
I think this clearly illustrates just how LOST and mired down in politics Honda really is at the moment.

If they produced the diesel now for the US market, they might have a little more expendable cash in the coffers to go and do the research necessary to do more work on their "solution" (hydrogen car) to a problem that does not even exist.

I am an avid Honda fan and for the first time I am thinking that it has become a rudderless ship. I understand that Honda has always raced to improve its products and occasionally given its designers free reign to create incredible performance cars. But now, to turn your focus away from Sochirosan's core beliefs is like a slap in the face to his memory and Honda customers everywhere. The new NSX was 95% ready for production, Acura has taken a styling cue from Edsel in an effort to create brand identity and changed its direction and commitments to it customer base to many times in the last two years. Now I have heard that the next generation Civic will only come in 3 and 5 door hatchbacks starting in 2012. Honda you are making mistake after mistake here. I will keep my S2000s and my 95 Civic but, as far as I am concerned if you continue on this course you've lost my loyalty to your future products and I will take my dollars elsewhere. Time will tell if this direction will save this ship or sink it once and for all.

Personally I think it would be great and ultimately logical to have the next gen civic as all hatchback - but the great north american buyer in the main disagrees with me. So I wonder where you got this info from?

Honda has concerns about the everchanging regulations in the US regarding Deisel. I wouldn't want to spend several milion dollars only to have some states/entire country change regs regarding emissions and making the technology obsolete.

Yeah, hydrogen... nobody knows, which way will be best in next 20-30 years, but EV vehicle with good batteries seems to be better solution than hydrogen. Why? By EV you will use electricity and charge batteries to move a car. By hydrogen car you use electricity to make a hydrogen, which is used to make electricity = more loses...
