I thought I read somewhere (here?) that Honda tuned their performance versions of the DOHC VTEC engines so that you can actually feel and hear the VTEC kick in?

Of course its a great exeprience hearing the switchover but Ill gladly take the increased midrange (usuable power) over the feel and sound of the former tune.

If you dont quite understand what Im talking about drive a stock Civic Si and a bolt-on/Hondata reflash Civic Si. HUGE difference in the midrange and that "VTEC kick" isnt as noticable as the stock car.

Yea, it's definitely a marketing tool, and a trademark of hardcore Hondas (like the Type R's). For a car like the TSX, may be this new variant is more suitable for the reason you said.

I don't think it is Honda that "pushed" the VTEC kick, but it is something more a result of folks noticing a surge past the switchover. It "happens" to exist in most VTEC powered cars, but didn't seem to be the case in the NSX (Dyno)

I'm definitely suspicious on the '04-'08 TSX's vtec switchover.

The VTEC switchover is just too high, switching at 5600rpm (instead of 6000rpm) would not have sacrified anything.

Except for fuel economy probably. But I agree that it seems too high -- especially on the '06-'08 models.

the VTEC is nothing but a huge OVERHYPE....Hondas head has just gotten bigger over it. Engineers thinks theyre all the engine gods in the engine world,(whereas they cant even produce a production V8) to be honest i dont even feel any surge and felt nothing, as a matter of fact it had no torque.

Being able to produce a V8 and actually producing one are 2 different things. I think IRL has proved that. After all, where did Chevy and Toyota go? It isn't like they CAN'T build a V8, that just isn't the market they appeal to.

And if you think it is hype, you have never really witnessed any of the dyno plots etc.

Let me guess, you drove a Civic with a D16 VTEC and thought it was overhyped?

not too sure if you really understand what torque curve is but having a flat torque curve means generate most of the torque at every rpm range, which is what a lot of auto makers are trying to achieve. If you want A LOT of torque, forget about gasoline engine, forget about V8, get a diesel.

If you have been keeping up with car news, you'd notice that BMW and Audi has already copied the SH-AWD idea. You can also argue that Honda copied Mitsubishi as it's more like an integrated system of Super AYC, ACD, traction control, ABS, VSA, etc.

Also, what's wrong with FWD bias? Remember, the TL-S, with worse power/weight ratio than IS350 and G35S 6MT, has lapped 2 seconds faster on Willow Springs, all driven by the same professional, well known race car driver on the same day (that means the most accurate test result you could ever get). Of course you can argue that's only one track, but my point again, is, what's wrong with FWD when it can at least keep up with other RWD vehicles?
