Sato was in what looked to be the RA107 with a few SA specific upgrades eventhough it states he was in the SA07. Button typically has about 2 tenths on RB, so expect him to be in the low 1:20s when he drives. At least the RA108 won't be the last car on the grid at the first race.

If Sato is truly running a RA107, at least the 108 is about a quarter sec faster! As someone had suggested before, maybe it's an engine problem...

I still go with Jenson's comment on the new car... it's a completely new car, still very green in development.

Even if we arrive at Australia next month 2 seconds off the pace... That's ok, as long as we don't go backwards or still 2 seconds off the pace in Oct/Nov then I'm good.

I'm surprised that with the designers hired from the other "more experienced" teams that their first attempt wasn't better... You'd think a culmination of learnings from 2-3 teams would yield something that was 0.5-1.0 secs off and not 2+ secs off...

If this car really is a clean slate to start with, it should post significant gains relative to its own pace after the first three races. Otherwise, don't bother with a season long testing/development session where a majority of the data would useless for 2009.

Generally agree with your statement. The current slow progress is due to exploring different set-up avenues with the all new design. It will take time, and it is interesting that so far the HF1 team had done so few miles in testing, even ignoring their late start to the testing season [with the new car].

Perhaps, at this early stage they are saving their testing milage [which is restricted for the year] so that when they have chosen a development path, they will have lots of miles "in the bank" to concentrate on the fine tuning required.

Whatever the case it's going to be a long year ahead, hopefully with better results than we endured last year [fingers crossed].

Hey, I will be happy as long as we progress. If we dont then I will have less faith in the things they tell the press. Last year Honda said the same thing, they had decent race pace but could not put in a fast lap to save their lives. I suspect some of the same issues are present only this time around they have a better plan on how to address them and a car they feel will be more responsive to change.

From the Ross Brawn interview, that's what he is planning to do this year. If he see the RA108 have some good potential then he said he will put enough resource on it to keep it going till the end of the year. If RA108 is proved to be another non-resolvable slow car. Then he will shift most of the resource towards next year. Like he said, next year will be a reset on the field. So even if the RA108 is uncompetitive, we can use this year to glue all parts of the team together and potentially fight for something in 2009.

in other words.. a very basic car that can respond to all kinds of aerodynamic changes easily

This may not be the direct answer but I think that's the closest we can get!

There is nothing wrong with that... This is F1, it took Schumacher 5 years at Ferrari to finally win a championship. (4 years for Ross Brawn), it's tough business. It takes a lot to win in F1. I'm sure Honda will have their day eventually...

The thing is, we (Fans) don't know exactly which area of the car is causing the slow laptime, I think aero is a major part of it but just aero alone won't do it... I remember Jenson said need more work with the new ECU, so how much time we'll gain for that we don't actually know. But as long as the team know where they need to improve then go improve them, we should see the gap to close down.

In 2006 the team responded after Indy and you see the 2nd half of the season we out developed other team on the car and Jenson became the highest scorer and won 1 race. So if RA108 is what they said it is, I see we can archive what they set to archive, regular point scoring by year end.

RA107 has design flaw, they identified them, but they couldn't fix it... that's why we had our low season. If RA108 is like RA107, then I'm sure Ross Brawn wouldn't hesitate and shift most of the resources to the RA109 early.

The BAR06 car was fast out of the box. Then there was a slump in performance and the team picked up the pace towards the end of the season and won a race in the wet after Alonso's wheel fell off. It was a great win and a great drive from Jensen, especially from his starting position of 13 or 14 (don't remember) but the point is that car was much better initially than the RA107 and the RA108. I remember Honda saying the same things last year during testing that they are now. It seems like they have a better plan, but only time will tell.

It looks like the RA108 is closer to 2 seconds off the pace in race trim. Either way, 2 seconds is huge, especially when the rest of the field will be developing during the season. Winter testing is far from over, but don't get your hopes up too high.

"We have made good progress this week in understanding the car, addressing the issues that we experienced at the last test and getting the car balanced for long runs. There is a great deal of work to do over the two remaining tests before we head to Melbourne, but I am now happier in the car and have more confidence to push it to the limit."

Rubens Barrichello
"We made some good steps with the driveability this week which have given me more confidence getting on the power. The car balance has improved with progress on the ride and suspension, and I'm feeling comfortable in the car and happier with my driving position. We have some hard work ahead of us but I am looking forward to the new updates which will specifically target the areas that we have been working on over the last couple of tests."

Alex Wurz
"We spent the test this week working on reliability runs and engine driveability and I am very pleased that we have found some improvements. We also completed a full race simulation today which went very well."

Steve Clark, Head of Race & Test Engineering
"After this week's test in Jerez, we now have a full understanding of the issues which have been affecting the handling of the car. The new components to address these issues will be ready in time for our next test in Barcelona. With this in mind, the focus this week was to sign off the race distance reliability of the car with Button and Alex completing full race distances today. We also made steady progress with improving the engine driveability and chassis controls which will give us a good starting point for the next test when we will be in a position to implement the new updates."

Again more updates and again they say they understand the issues they are having. These two statements are what makes this season thus far different from last. Last year they did not understand until later what was wrong with the car.

Lets see what happens in Barcelona. Maybe they will feel confident enough to empty the car and go for ultimate pace to see exactly where they stack up.
