6-speed AT is not mentioned at all. No plan for this in the future?

Strengthening Automatic Transmission (AT) Production:

* The production capabilities at the Hamamatsu Plant will be further strengthened as the leader plant of global AT production, with manufacturing technologies to be further advanced in Hamamatsu.

Honda is already offering 6-speed auto (actually, a 6-speed semi-auto with full auto mode) in European Civic. So, it is already a part of the plan. Only a matter of time when its availability is expanded.

CVT and VW/Audio DSG are more next generation. Why would Honda want to spend a lot of money upgrading everything to 6 speed? They might want to skip the costs associated with that and instead put the money towards offering these high tech transmissions in maybe 5 years down the road? Probably longer if the DSG patent needs to run out.

They're just playing "hop" potato. GM and others totally skipped the 5AT and jumped to 6AT. So the next generation Honda transmissions will be 7AT with manual mode. Just a guess.

VW (including Audi/Bugatti/SEAT/Škoda) DSG technology (a dual-clutch gearbox) is licensed from BorgWarner. So Honda could license this technology from BorgWarner without patent issues. Supposedly a few other manufactures have already done so. After going through some presentation on the history of Honda transmissions, I think Honda prefers to develop their own technology.

I do like their idea of Honda's 6speed semi-auto transmission (aka i-Shift). It’s a good step on getting rid of that inefficient torque converter. However from what I read, Honda's i-Shift needs to mature more before replacing the current automatic transmission.

One wonders is Honda willing to deal with JATCO and use JATCO's excellent CVT automatics on future Honda models. Since JATCO has now built CVT's that can withstand the power of the 3.5-liter V-6 used on the 2007 Nissan Altima and Maxima models, Honda could use JATCO CVT units for the Fit, Civic and Accord models.
