OK, I put a poll together. Here's the link to it, let's see what the numbers really show, out of curiousity.

Good question. I find the headrest on my SI perfect. This is the first car I've driven where I can actually rest my head against it and still drive comfortably. Any other car I have to lean my head so far back that staring straight forward has me looking at my visor.

The whole seat really fits me like a glove.

Honda's point for the headrest is whiplash protection

how the fack is it going to protect you if it is miles from your head - old crown vics come to mind.

If you think these head rests are bad, try some from Volvo.

Found this on cars.com:

Head restraints: Not simply "headrests" for occupant comfort, head restraints are intended to protect against whiplash injuries, particularly in a rear-end collision. Most of the vehicles tested by IIHS so far provide inadequate to fair protection, mainly because the head restraints don't extend high enough or aren't close enough to the occupant's head to prevent injury. Exceptions include the Civic and Chevrolet Cobalt, which scored Good. Among the other small cars, the best score is Acceptable. The larger car categories, including the generally high-rated luxury models, have an even lower percentage of Good ratings in the IIHS rear-crash test.

Buyers should look for head restraints for every seating position that extend high enough for the tallest likely occupant, and rest, or can be positioned, close to the head. Better still, active head restraints move forward in a collision to catch the occupant's head and ease it back. These remain rare in affordable cars; the 2006 Hyundai Sonata and some versions of the 2005 Subaru Impreza are notable exceptions.

Well what I was trying to get at is that maybe the Si's headrests are different from the other civics because I haven't heard anything from any Si owner. And we're pretty picky. Just look at how many times DBW has come up as an issue. So maybe if it is just the other civic's headrests that have that problem, then Si owners should not vote. As someone else mentioned above, I think the seats and headrests are perfect. It fits me like a glove, too.

The seats in the SI and Civic coupe are identical, except for the material that covers them. The sedan seat is slightly different in appearance, however, the headrest tips forward just as the coupe/SI does. I stopped at the Honda dealer about 40 minutes ago to check this out. The sedan headrest is tilted forward as well to provide the same support I get in my coupe.

Are the seats really identical? I was under the impression that the Si seats were more heavily bolstered on the sides.

More heavily than the sedan, yes. Than the coupe, no.

Still at only 5% on the poll as being unbearable. Statistically, using the "Law of Large Numbers" to extrapolate that our sub-set accurately reflects the larger set as a whole, even with a margin of error, this still means that the seats are OK with 95% of the owners of this car.

I don't think that's going to do much to encourage Honda to make a design change at this point. The only thing that might alter that is if a number of people are injured and they can pinpoint the headrest as having exascerbated the injury or caused it.
