Immobilizer anti-theft?    (Score: 1, Normal) 04-17-2006 13:53

I was wondering how safe from theft my 2006 Civic Hybrid is? Having the car only startable by an expensive to replace key with programmable chip that can only be copied by a Honda dealer sounds pretty secure. A few people have been ribbing me about Civics being the most stolen cars in the U.S.

Sounds like they're really digging deep into the barrel to come up with something to make fun of you for. Hope none of them drive pickup trucks, Camrys, Corollas, or Accords, because they're up there too. How often a car is stolen is primarily a function of how popular it is. The more units a particular car sells, the greater the demand for replacement parts and thus greater thefts. Look at the most frequently stolen cars and you'll not see the Civic Hybrid up there. Perhaps when it's 7-10 years old the 2006 Civics will make an appearance, but not until then. There's little reason to steal one. So your answer should be that your model year is not frequently stolen.

If someone wants it, they're going to get it... on a flatbed if they have to. But as you mentioned, Civics are now significantly more complicated to steal then they have been in the past. A friend of mine has a '95 EX... a strong pull on the handle (you basically pull the handle section out of the door) and it opens. Not the most secure.

Additionally, that 'most stolen' category primarily contains 'older' cars, not their newer siblings.

2004 NICB Data:

• #1 stolen car: Civic (1995 model year)

CCC 2004 Stolen Vehicle data:

• #25 - Civic (2000 model year)
(Older Integras top the list at #1, 3, 6, 7, 9, 11, 14, 16 for 2000 and older model years)

NHTSA 2001 stats:

• #140 Honda Civic (all years, based on theft per 1000 units insured) (sorry, couldn't find anything newer for the NHTSA)

Why the big differences in where the Civic sits on the stolen lists? The method of data collection. Each of the above agencies use a different method for compiling their lists.

Two articles on the disparity in statistics between the agencies:

Exactly. Its the older models that are stolen more. News stories usually just report the models and everyone thinks 'ooooh, Civic, yeah' most people miss that its a model year like 1995. Newer vehicles are much much harder to steal.

Thanks for all the info! I was trying to determine if I should get more anti-theft stuff but it doesn't sound like I need it. It would be interesting to know what the theft statistics are for Civics with the Immobilizer.

Every little bit helps. If they want your car, they are likely going to get it. But for the amateur thiefs, they are going to move on to the next car if they see a club. You've probably got 10% professionals, and 90% amateurs.
