Took a look at the new 06 civic yesterday. Dealer only had two one silver LX sedan and one grey EX sedan with no nav. Overall I like the outside. The interior is less desirable. The doors have way too much going on. The dash isnít as bad as I thought it would be but I think Honda just tried too hard to go a new direction. They should have kept it simple.

I would much prefer the hatch in the US than the SI coupe. Having a 04 SI I love the hatch plus performance. The Euro hatch looks mean, sporty worth the extra cash. The US version looks like an Acura step child. Should have made it mean not family with a great engine. Is it just me?

One more note. Everyone keeps saying itís an econo-box. What so economy about it? 17-20K plus? Since when is that cheep? I can get an Accord for less. So what will the next generation of Accord go for 30K+. They are pricing the Civic just way too high. What happen to a 96 civic for less than 10K. I would prefer a simple sporty style that does not have navigation. Get an Accord if you want that crap.

I guess the fit/jazz or city will take up the econo class for Honda.

1996 Civic for less than $10K is history because it had to be. Just count number of cars today from *any* automaker that have an MSRP under $10K and are reasonably well equipped and deliver a decent driving experience.

$17-20K is cheap when you consider that you could end up paying $23-26K in an Accord to get some of the more expensive features. You sure arenít going to see an Accord with navigation system sold at less than $17K, now are you?

Remember, Civic can be had for $14-15K (at MSRP on base model). And that, by any measure in todayís market, is to be considered cheap.

This is exactly what I mean. I don't want a civic with nav. When a new civic LX is 17K and I can get an Accord for 500 above dealer invoice about 17k. I'll take the Accord. I want an inexpensive civic. One you can get for everyday driving that you can fix up with an intake/exhaust wheels and your good to go. The baby acura is not a civic anymore.

My 04 SI had a sticker just over 20k but I paid just over 15. You wont see the new civic line ups with that type of discount for about 4 years.

Honda needs a 10k car. Simple, fuel savy but at the same time room for aftermarket goodies.

Honda does need a $10K car, and that's what the Fit is for. But it still won't be 10K, I'd estimate from $12-13 base and with options up to $16k. People want well optioned cars, that's what sells. The ultra basic 96 Civic hatches (DX or VX or whatever) didn't sell all that well, but EX coupes sure did.

And $17k for an LX Civic is the msrp, it won't be long before you can get that car for near invoice.

Simple. Honda are a bunch of people who "think" we dont need ITR's CTR's and all of the other goodies n color combos we dont "deserve". Wish it wasnt so but instead of 200 hp ctrs we got the 160 hp civic Si with 15" wheels. Hurray.

end rant.

magpilot, you can't have it both ways. If the Accord is being discounted to the price of the Civic, you have to decide why. Is the Accord overpriced for whatever reason to begin with? And the Civic fairly priced? If the Civic is not fairly priced at this level, as you argue, why would it not see these types of discounts for 4 years?

I think the market will give us some answers soon. It is a tough call because the Civic has such a high quotient of inate goodness, that people who have come to know it, come back to it. It is harder to identify. You can't point to a V8 like in the new Mustang and say this is a value relative to it's competition. But saavy buyers who recognize it's class leading NHV levels, the silky smooth trans etc will keep this new Civic moving out the door for awhile.

Good points playeachday.

Don't get me wrong the new civic is worth the money for what you get. I'm just saying it's not an econo-box. A simplified Civic of old would be nice to have.

All interesting points of view. I'm reading blogs from US people and they are complaing that they don't get the "goodies" that Euro customers get ... but what about Canada? Grief ... now I understand our population is that of a small town in New Hampshire ... but we get boned on a regular basis. We haven't had Navi on an Accord until 06. Forget about Satelite Radio (not Honda's fault all the thanks goes to the CRTC the governing body protecting us Canadians from everything evil!!!!!). No Civic hatches, no VSA on Civic, no 6 sp manual on V6 Accord Sedans. Nope - not only do we have terrible weather, are taxed out our Ying-Yangs, have higher gasoline prices (and we produce the stuff!!!) - but we also have to take it up various body parts from Honda Canada. Ah .. but we do have better beer!

yeah coz american are so boring.. bland.. hahaha i remember i seen more interesting and creative colors for asian civic than the american civic.. they were so well equip that make the american accord look so bare bone. american market are just too price sensitive. they are used to cheap gas.. cheap cars.. in asia its more expensive to BUY a car than to FIX a car. but in USA its cheaper to BUY new car than to FIX a car. So the only way honda can give the american market a cheap car is to give less. well like they said.. u get what u paid for. No ITR? how many ppl buy ITR or CTR? not many.. why sell a low volume product? its just inlogical.

(1) What's the point of NAVI if all is white outside? How can you get bearings when lost in the white tundra... mile after mile.. What are the intructions? At the next ice floe pull the reins to make the huskeys go right.... stop before the glacier and watch for the baby seals on the icebergs to the left.

(2) Satellite radio? Can it work at such high latitudes? The satellites are on an equatorial orbit and thus quite low on the horizon.

(3) I hate to burst your bubble, but US beer has gotten very good.

Beer always taste better when it's cold eh. HA HA!

Canada over taxes everything that's what you get when you have a socialist government. No Fox news till recently. High fuel tax, hey you have to pay for the "free" medical benefit somehow.

Sorry you don't get the good Hondas though. I know they call the EX an SI up there. Buurrr.

When the ITR was brought over, I seem to recall that it sold fairly decent in the states because it was limited. It is still a wanted car by many. Just like the NSX. Low volumes were sold but it still sold and its production lasted for more than 10 years.

Yes - Right you are .... Funny TonyE's response was BELOW THRESHOLD!! Hahahahahaha. Tundra??? Isn't that a Toyota? Upstate New York gets more snow than we do! And our Beer is still better.

Canada is Socialist, we do have better medical, we watch Fox news only for the entertainment value, all of our Hondas are the good ones, Si is now the EX ..., high fuel tax doesn't pay for our med-care (our income taxes do). The only claim to fame (besides our beer)is that we do have is better coffee and really really nice people.

The Civic hatch outsold our reg. Civics for years (thanks, in part, to our friends in Quebec). That's why Honda Canada actually convinced Honda America to bring in the Fit. What a great car. Watch - Honda will set the standard in the sub-comapct with this car. With over 55 mpg (proper Imperial Gallon) who cares about fuel costs?!!!
