We're trying to crack a 64-bit secret key code.

The last code cracked was for a 56-bit key which was found in 250 days. This 64-bit one is taking quite a bit longer, currently at 1,755 days.

So if you encrypted a password using a 64-bit key, it would take a few years to crack it by brute force means of trying every single combination. I think this is just a geeky way to show that a 64-bit key _can_ be cracked and that you should use a much higher bit key when encrypting something.

I believe it took an university (don't know which one) about 2 weeks to break an 64big code using a networked cluster of 50+ computers.

It'll be hard to break it with PCs. Unless you're a mad mathmatician and came up with a more effective formula in breaking code other than brute force.

Is this a Honda key? I hear the new Accord has the fob built in. Why would you want to break a nice key? Are you trying to steal a car?

Hmmm, while you are trying to break keys, I'm just lucky enough to remember where I put mine.

Man, keys and badges... the Dilbert Curse.

have you considered using those spare CPU cycles for Genome or Folding@home? Seems like those are more worthwhile causes that cracking a 64 bit key.

I'm not familiar with folding@home. Can you tell me about it?

The editors have been doing the 64-bit key for some time now. It was before all these other projects became popular and we figure we'll see it through its completion.

Folding@home info:

Genome@home info:

http://gah.stanford.edu/

CHeck out both projects and you'll see that they have real scientific benefit, and potentially future medical benefits as well. Sidenote, the clients have very cool visuals while running (if you want to display them).

I had been running Genome@home on my overclocked Athon pc for quite sometime. These are also good tests of stability if you have an overclocked CPU ;-)
