Again their starts were unbelievable. Button was stunned:
“Alonso shot past me as if I was standing still, and I thought, I had a pretty good start!“ Honda has analysed the Renault starts and found out that in the first 3 seconds they gain 5 to 10 metres on everybody. The biggest advantage they have is between 30 and 50 kph. From 100 kph on, the traction control is allowed to kick in, which means everybody is equal, but as Renault accelerates to this speed, they still benefit from traction control like effects. Somehow they manage to keep the revs so low, that the engine does not die. Whereas other acceleration curves have up and downs, the Renault becomes consistently faster with no wheelspin at all.

Also the French team’s pitstops are faster than the rest of the grid and once again the Honda-engineers have done their analysis: “The Renault engine must consume at least 10 percent less than ours.“
Ross Brawn found out: “They pull off the refuelling nozzle the same moment they throw their car off the jacks. This is a quite risky trick, but very efficient.“

I haven't paid close attention lately, but isn't the car usually back on the ground -far- before the fueling is done anyway?

I think the danger is with the car moving up or down and risking creating sparks from static discharge.

They have those grounded connector plates in the pit box, but you never know.

What I mean is that fueling the car takes a lot longer than changing the tires, right? So unless you're only putting 4 seconds of fuel in the car or something, the car should be off the jacks and ready to go by the time the fueling is done. There shouldn't be a need to detach the nozzle while dropping the car. Not unless you're doing a 'splash and dash.'

I am confused. Oh well.

I think RB means that taking the nozzle out WHILE dropping the car is a risc because we all know taking the nozzle out can something go wrong. They need to stop pressing the bars that connect the nozzle and then pull it out straight. If they pull immediately at the bars or don't do it straight they can't get it out sometimes. I think the risc he talks about is this.

Also, if fueling takes longest of all, having the nozzle out already when the car hits the ground will give them some time. Time that other teams needs to wait for the fueling to finish and THEN drop the car.

The car drops before the fuel is pulled out.

That part of the article didn't make sense. The "Our Spies" reports from GP2004.com seem totally speculative.

In keeping an open mind, the only thing I can think of is that the car is dropped the instant the nozzle is tugged off i.e. guy pulls up and car drops down hence one less tug is needed to remove nozzle.
