Heard on the radio today that over six hundred thousand vehicles are being recalled by honda including cr-vs, tls and accords.Apparently has something to with faulty ignition that causes certain models to roll forward though the vehicle is in park. Couldn't find the story anywhere on the internet .Anyone know anything about this?

*************************************************************FYI**************************************************************

NOV. 3 - American Honda Motor Co., Inc. today announced a voluntary recall of certain Honda and Acura models to repair ignition switches that may allow the key to be removed from the switch without the shift lever being placed in the "Park" position.

The recall involves approximately 650,000 automatic transmission equipped vehicles - manual transmission equipped vehicles are not affected. Included in the recall are certain 1998 to 1999 Honda Accord models, some 1999 models of the Odyssey and some 2002 CR-V models. Also included in the recall are certain 1997 to 1999 Acura CL coupes and some 1999 Acura TL sedans.

The situation is created by excessive wear or contamination in the key cylinder that prevents proper shift interlock operation, making it possible to turn the ignition key to the "OFF" position and remove the key without shifting the transmission to "PARK." Owners of all affected vehicles are urged to make sure their transmission is in the Park position and the Parking Brake applied before exiting the vehicle. Following this simple procedure will eliminate all potential accidents or injuries.

Owners of affected vehicles will be contacted by American Honda when parts are available and asked to take their vehicle to an authorized dealer to be repaired free of charge. The repair involves the update or replacement of the lock cylinder body while retaining the original lock and key assemblies.

Mailings will begin in December. Customers may also contact their Honda or Acura dealer with questions.

I think the recall read - key can be removed when transmission is not in Park.

Duh. I don't mean to sound hipocritical, but what kind of dumb a** takes the keys out of their car when it is not in park. They don't need a license to drive if they are that absent minded. I can see it now someone yapping on the phone trying to get out of their car. I guess this type of person is the type that would be forbidden to drive a manual transmission car. See what automobile engineers are up against. You have to be on the lookout for the stupidist thing a counsumer could do, and then take it to the next level when designing their vehicles.

I find the part sharing intereasting. Tl's to Odyssey's to CRV'S. Also the spread in years 97-2002. It makes you think how many parts in a new TL are unique. Part sharing across platforms is used by every manufacture but to find out your 35k TL has parts from a Accord or Civic could be hard to take.

you're right..but fact is it shouldn't happen..honda never had this problem before..it seems they are straying way too far from what got them to where they are now...they need to get back to their roots and stop messing around with their reputation...just too many problems with their products these days, you would think they just started making cars 10 yrs ago..

My friends do. You ever been with someone when they pull in to a parking space, park the car and you feel the last jerking motion forward? That's what they do. They pull into Park and almost simultaneoously turn the engine off and remove the key. They don't even give it that one additional millisecond for Park mode to be fully engaged...for all I know, the lever is probably stuck somewhere between Park and Reverse. No wonder the cars are rolling backwards.

So I don't think people are intentionally pulling the keys out of their ignitions, I think it's more a result of this type of carelessness.
