ZANARDI: ON THE TRACK AGAIN

Alessandro Zanardi is finally making a racing comeback. The Italian driver will compete in the FIA ETCC finale in Monza, his first race since his horrific crash at Lausitz in 2001. Zanardi's approach to this debut started at the beginning of July, when he tested a specially modified ETCC BMW in Adria. The driver and the team decided to intensify the testing sessions, which have become steadily more serious. Seventy days after his first test, Zanardi officially announced his intention to race in Monza, at the wheel of a third BMW Team Italy-Spain's car, which has been equipped with a system to assist him in driving, designed and realised by the Italian company Fadiel. "I wish to thank BMW and the team for backing me in this fantastic adventure," he said. "To race again is a dream come true. The car is extremely funny to drive, and the FIA ETCC drivers are of top level. It won't be an easy task for me, but I'll try my best to be competitive." Will this race mark the beginning of a new racing career for the 36-year old? "At the moment my comeback in Monza is just a parenthesis, it will open and close. But I'm very excited, because asking me if I'm happy to race again, is like asking a cat if it likes mice. I'm conviced that, with a team like this, I could even achieve to win races again."
Fisichella will also be participating in the race driving for Alfa. Speed coverage of the ETCC '03 season begins next week on October 25. BTCC coverage begins Nov. 8.

Zanardi also finished the required laps at the CART race this year in a specially prepared car. And from what people said, he still was pretty fast...

I didn't follow F1 when Senna died, but I heard about it. I sort of knew who he was, that he was probably the top open wheel driver in the world. I did know who Zanardi was, rooting for him driving (and owning all) in CART for Honda, then his disappointing F1 try. When he came back to CART, I was ecstatic. He struggled a bit, and when I saw he was leading and going to win in Germany, I was extremely thrilled. And when I saw the pix and found out he lost his legs in that wreck, I was devastated. I thought of Senna, and almost cried for Zanardi. I still have the pic, where you can make out his legs and his head is slumped forward. Sad times. And I figured when he survived (if he did), he might wish he had died as other greats had, in their car, kicking ass. But after I saw how happy he was and that he would walk again, I changed my tune. The man loves life, and he's too resilient to stay down even at the loss of his legs. Its good to see him back in racing, in any form. The man was one of the best. Its too bad he didn't do better in F1, I would have loved to see him win a Grand Prix. But the 3 dominating CART championships will have to do.
