ICE to FCEV "engine" swap    (Score: 1, Normal) 01-09-2019 14:25

Recently, I have been day-dreaming of doing the ICE to FCEV "engine" swap.

Say, if I like the looks and handling of a certain car, but hate the smell of the exhaust, the engine rattle/noise, and love the EV torque; how hard would it be to do so?

I assume the hardest part is packaging the H2 tank, and then the electronics (unless you just swap everything, every wire, ugh.. what a major surgery).

In concept, this is doable in the future. Hyundai is already allowing the public to buy (not lease) their FCEV, so junkyard part will be available in theory.

Probably easier to just swap to pure BEV.

Don't forget the batteries, although small ones you still need to find place just because current h2 architecture is like a hybrid between h2 and BEV.
Or much easier maybe is to have something like the bmw 7 series burning both gasoline and h2. Not as efficient and for sure not as quiet:)
But easier maybe.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_Hydrogen_7

But only if you drive every day. Didn't know that. BMW didn't pressurize the h2 so it'll warm up and in 10 days it'll be all vapors:)
Guess bmw invented vaporware:)

Yeah, it's a pipe dream for me for now. Or, not cost efficient since I have no knowledge nor enough disposable income to pay someone to do so.

I read somewhere that someone converted a Tesla Model S to using FCEV.

I've seen that "hydrogen" Bimmer in the past. They use to have one (two?) of them around UCI quite a few years ago.

Sort of a dead end really because you still have to have the ICE and transmission and what not. Driving the FC and electric motors in series is more compact and efficient.

OTOH, burning hydrogen does fix the one BIG issue with all EVs... HEAT. I can imagine that big Bimmer had a nice heater for those Northern Winters.

The Clarity FCEV has a wimpy defroster/heater and it even lacks heated side mirrors. All in the name of EFFICIENCY!

Yep. You don't care about cold weather when in SoCal but hey the rest of the word gets snow and cold weather.

Again they could've good heater and heated mirrors and let the user decide if they want to be efficient or freeze to death:)

Maybe add a 20lb propane tank in the trunk... excellent for tailgate parties and that balmy Michigan and Upstate New Your in January.

According to a Tesla forum, their rear window defroster and side mirrors (a cold weather option) uses 280 watts.

I think I'm gonna suggest that my wife wipes down the mirrors on the parking lot at work.

THAT IS EVIL.

How about putting a Benz 5cyl turbodiesel into a Tesla body?

Again in SoCal you won't get ice but try to defrost thick ice.
Your wife will be out of business if you suggest to do that in colder climates...
Tesla even rolled sw(what else) update for model 3 to the windows so they roll down a bit otherwise they freeze shut and you can get into the car, no matter what you try....cold climates of course.
And try to open your hockey stick door if you had it iced overnight. Not unique to tesla...
I remember thy time when my dad used hot water so he can unjam the door lock and get into the car.
Now a days you just preheat the car...just a bit planning.
280 watts is roughly 1+ mile @75mph in tesla or any other EV for that matter.

Maybe it's much easier to do EV swap and 50K to spare.

If these guys can convert fiat 124 so clean I'm all for it and you keep the stick! A bit more upkeep for the transmission, so extra oil changes than standard EV.
I would love euro civic 8G or/and s2k!
