Dispenser Issues and Infrared Interface    (Score: 1, Normal) 12-12-2018 23:00

Went to UCI to top off the fuel tanks. I was down about 1.5 Kg and I figured I might as well fill her up.

The Internet noted that the dispenser had been having issues and a technician was on site.

Sure enough, when I hooked her up, I would not get fuel. For whatever reason, the station thought my car was filled up.

I let the Mirai behind me go by and she was able to pump all of 3.5Kg into her tank. That's a full load for that car.

So, I drove back in and tried.... nothing... So the technician ordered a new dispenser and took my cell number, telling me he'd text me ASAP after he replaced the dispenser.

A couple of hours later he texted me he was done, so I drove down to the station... took 5 minutes from leaving my desk to getting in front of the pump (*) and there, waiting for me, were the tech and an engineer. So I hooked up the car and, Yahoo!, it worked. I got a full 1.5Kg.

Now this is the interesting bit... the engineer took a picture of my fill up male appendage (**). If you look towards the 6 to 9 o'clock of the appendage... you see a curving plate. To the naked eye (***) it looks like plain metal, but with the cell phone camera you can clearly see FIVE glowing dots. Turns out the dispenser has a glass ring and it communicates with the car via infrared.

The tech and engineer had replaced that glass ring, which is BTW, the main reason you don't want to DROP the dispenser. Break the glass and it's sayonara to your refueling event.

Anyhow, I'm relieved the car is not broken. Perhaps next time I will clean the dispenser's glass ring (it surrounds the female socket) with some cloth.

And the really strange part was that the Toyotas had no problem. Perhaps their LEDs are brighter?

When I get back from vacation, I'm gonna talk to AHM and the dealer about it.

(*) Yep, we are blessed in that way. We both work within a mile (my wife 1/8) from one of the large H2 stations.

(**) How else do you call that without being vulgar? No clue, no clue.

(***) Hmmm... naked eye... appendages... I'm on thin ice. ;-)
