Recently Toyota should get more credit for developing a truly unique design language and, although I'm not a great fan of it, at least they tend to make cars looking fresh and modern.

The interior is the first one in decades which I actually like on a car of this class from them. Pretty clean and simply nice looking to me.

I used to like the Civic over the Corolla in terms of design (especially the european 8th Gen). But this time the Corolla has won for me in all aspects. Both cars have an more dynamic design, though the Corolla keeps an japanese heritage in its looks while the 10th Gen Civic looks all out american to me on the outside. Same thing in the interior, which I used to like the Civic better. Now both cars have an similar instrument cluster, but the Corolla looks more comfy.

It wouldn't take much to look better than the previous gen. That being said, this is nowhere near a gamechanger compared to the way the 2016 Civic impacted this class. With a new Civic set for 2021(if it sticks to the current cycle), I'd be worried if I were in their camp. This car is supposed to be next gen blowing the current cars away. While I get looks are subjective, even the mechanicals seem to be only comparable to the current C segment of cars.

Overall it's an improvement but it's mostly just Toyota playing catch up at this point. The international model shown in the first couple pictures here does have a cleaner, more upscale looking rear end while the U.S. model's rear fascia looks kinda dull.

I think the outside looks very good and will be more than competitive in the class...

...That said, what the hell is that 17" laptop monitor stuck to the middle of the dash? I hope it's just the angle of the picture or something, but if not, what the hell were they thinking. That thing looks huge.

Overall, inside and outside looks still goes to the Mazda 3 for me.

Sigh...that sharp angular protrusion at the headlight turn signal is utterly unnecessary and would have been better off with a smoother transition that didn't protrude as much. The design is quite uninspired overall IMO. I'm sure it will sell like hotcakes though.

Although this detail surprised me: rear beam suspension. (Car&Driver)

Platform: The fourth-generation Mazda 3 will use the companyís latest Skyactiv-Vehicle Architecture. The new platform is stronger, and it lets less noise, vibration, and harshness into the cabin compared with the current modelís setup. Mazda claims it has improved the 3ís ride quality as well. Unfortunately, the 3 is expected to ditch its multilink rear suspension for a lighter, cheaper, and easier-to-package torsion beam.

And the new Corolla is going away from the torsion beam suspension.

"All Corollas will use multilink rear suspension instead of the old car's torsion-beam setup, while the front McPherson strut-type suspension has been redesigned and Toyota says new shock absorbers provide "exemplary ride comfort."

Judging from my 2016 Prius company car which also rides on TNGA and the refinements of the new Camry I test drove alongside the new Accord last year at the LA Auto Show, the new Corolla will be a serious competitor especially if they can keep the price a bit below Honda. For me, the turbo engine in the Civic makes a big difference. The up-level engine in the Corolla just puts it on par with the Civic's base engine.

They really did a nice job on that one. Pretty much the direct opposite of the Type R.

I actually like the exterior design of the 10g Civic, including the hatchback and the coupe. It's modern and unique. However. I'm not a fan of the oversize vents, both front and rear, on some versions of this model.

The new Corolla looks good in comparison to the boring versions that preceeded it. It's good to see Toyota trying again. Their cars had become appliances on wheels and good taxis. Though, I'd still have to give Honda and Mazda the edge with relation to driving dynamics.
