No Jeff. In order for it to be very 'F1' of them, he would have to be a current MB employee that will join Honda after this season is over LOL.

Quite the delta between Hartley (new PU) who nearly qualified best of the rest in Q1 and within a second of the best.

Gasly (old PU) however just missed out.

It would seem that the delta matches the expected half second anticipated. That's a great result, the problem with Gasly's PU, not so much. :(

It's about half a second between Hartley and Gasly, so I would hope the Gasly delta could be larger ^o^.

Interesting article from Honda F1 official site:

http://en.hondaracingf1.com/insights/the-power-of-track-traction.html

quote
“Current FIA regulations don’t allow traction control on the ECU, so we cannot have automatic traction control,” Mori-san points out. “From the free practice results and the driver’s comments we do tune the boost settings so the driver gets what he wants at each corner. If we saw massive wheelspin, then basically the driver can manage the traction by himself. It’s definitely more on the driver than on the settings.”

But there’s more to putting the power down than simply the way the power unit is being operated. The greater the vertical load on the rear tyres, the less likely they are to spin, and that means the level of downforce also has an impact.

the machine translation is a little difficult to follow but if Honda is going from around 715 to 750hp, that does sound promising. And it sounds like they should be well ahead of Renault by then (and hopefully far more reliable) but again, the machine translation is a little weird, as it seems to say that Renault themselves claim to only be down about 15hp from Ferrari/Merc.

From article: Renault’s CA says their engine in race trim is no more then 15ps down on Mercedes and Ferrari but 25ps ahead of Honda.
The other data show however that “R” quali engine is 710 ps now with c spec being at 730ps and Honda is introducing 750ps one at Austin. Ferrari in quali trim is the leader at 790ps and Mercedes follows with 10ps less then prancing horse power plant. In race trim Ferrari and Mercedes should be leveled.

Very interesting!

With the potential for still a lot more development hopefully, with the potential and ability to achieve more than the other 3 manufacturers, it will be really interesting to see what happens in the next two seasons with the Red Bull teams in F1. :-)

Andretti also doesn't want to lose the engine which makes the same power and is easier on fuel.

Based on ALO's behavior, and I don't just mean recently with Honda, part of me has little sympathy if his chickens come home to roost and he is without an Indycar seat, on the other hand we know it would be great for the series. There was an article recently suggesting he might be forced to NASCAR because of what he did to Honda (F1) and Honda and Chevy not being sure their engine secrets could be kept separate from each other within an all-Andretti structure.

Back to F1. I hope we see the new engine in Russia and it's a good as some suggest it is.

Was just thinking this past weekend watching Sonoma, how much better he is than most of the Indycar drivers. I know there are a lot of really good drivers in Indycar, but not on Alonso's level.

I'd be willing to say he can beat Scott Dixon & Rossi in the same equipment.

That being said, if he goes to Indycar, he'll be a contender for the season championship.

The bigger issue is that if Andretti left Honda, he would likely lose Rossi.

This week, the formation of Steinbrenner/Harding racing was announced. The team will run Pato O'Ward and Colton Herta with Chevy Engines and a technical partnership with Andretti. It has nothing to do with Zak Brown or McLaren.

The Harding-Steinbrenner team will buy suspension tuning advice (settings) and hardware from the Andretti organization. But this will supposedly be a one-way window to the point where Chevy and Honda seem to be reasonably happy.

For those unaware, damper technology is the black art of Indycar and is almost totally open for development. To get an idea of how important it is, look at how well O'Ward performed at Sonoma (with Andretti Dampers) compared to the performance of Conor Daly and Gabby Chavez earlier in the season.

As I understand it, if ALO participates in indy car at all, it will be in a fifth Andretti-Honda car for the Indy 500 and perhaps a couple of other races. As I understand it, there is nothing contractually Honda could do about that, if it wanted to.

Correct

Well, with that statement, I've got to ask, what was the issue ?

From the outside, putting this and that together, with the benefit of hindsight etc etc, it seems Honda went in quite respectful, which is the correct approach. They had been out of F1 for a long time, McLaren obviously were in F1 continuously, and should have had a better idea of the requirements, technically and in attitude, responsiveness etc. Honda historically sometimes were over-confident in their achievements (post Senna/Prost days, the MP4/4 days were obvioulsy superb). I think about Brawn coming in and giving them a reality check. OK all good. Except McLaren seemed to be over-confident and plain wrong on where they were. And also (even more weirdly) uncooperative, and hard to work with. Boullier really didn't seem to help. Also, they didn't stick around for the long-haul and have faith in Honda delivering, though I cut them some slack on that because Honda really did struggle. Still, I think Honda expected more from McLaren, and more of a view on the bigger-picture of a long term plan. Anyway all my guessing, so wonder if there's anything to add ?
