If you want to see what makes Scott Dixon (Ganassi-Honda) one of the great Indycar drivers of all time, go back and watch the Toronto race restart on Lap 33. Dixon was second behind Penske-Chevy’s Josef Newgarden. The weather was hot and the track was slippery. Newgarden accelerated too soon and the car drifted right into the concrete sidewall. To a normal viewer, this looked like a gift to Dixon. But once you know the situation, Dixon’s skill can be better appreciated.

After the first pit stop at Lap 23, Dixon was breathing down Newgarden’s neck. Newgarden knew he had to get a good jump in order to outrun Dixon down the start-finish straight into the first turn. He jumped a little too soon, hit the wall, and fell back to 13th.

Dixon’s last challenge was...

This was a good race to watch. I'm glad Dixon and Honda are both in the lead.

The current Marshall Pruett This Week in Indycar podcast has an interesting Q&A with Chris Simmons, Dixon's engineer.

At one point he contrasts the styles of Dixon to former teammate Dario Franchitti. Dixon apparently likes a stable, predictable nose, and will deal with the instability in the rear end that results from such a setup. Franchitti liked the rear end to be stable.

This could explain Dixon's success this season, since the new Indycar has a lot less downforce, particularly at the rear, and naturally results in a lot of rear-end dancing.

Alexander Rossi and Marco Andretti are also known to favor this kind of setup.

Nah, I favor Newgarden. You read his piece in the May issue of R&T? The man's positively literate.

More importantly, there are at least four reasons that IndyCar is such good racing these days from a spectator's perspective vis-a-vis F1.
1. Qualifying doesn't determine the outcome of the race.
2. Competitors can actually pass one another on track during the race and do, more than once. Imagine that.
3. IndyCars sound great.
4. IndyCars don't look asinine.

On Indycar Road and Street courses, qualifying doesn't determine who wins, necessarily. But it determines who has a reasonable chance to win. Especially on Natural Terrain Road Courses, but some street courses as well.

Hence: The pole-sitter won Barber (Newgarden), Road America (Newgarden), The Indy GP (Will Power), and Long Beach (Alexander Rossi). The pole sitter crashed out of the lead at St. Pete (Wickens), Toronto (Newgarden) and the second Detroit Race (Rossi).

Further, the most important session for the Drivers title will be Mid-Ohio qualifying. If Newgarden does not qualify ahead of Dixon, the Drivers Championship race may be over. (more on that next week.
