Can Honda Turn the Chevy Tide at the Indy 500?    (Score: 1, Normal) 05-24-2018 07:11

Qualification weekend was not a strong point for Honda teams in the Indy 500. Both of the cars that got “bumped” out of the field were Hondas (Pippa Mann and James Hinchcliffe). And only two of the top 9 cars that ran for pole Sunday were Hondas. In short, Honda got smoked.

How did that happen when Honda has had the edge at Indy for the last two seasons? There are a couple of theories floating around:
1. Chevy found some top end power since last year.
2. The strength of the Honda package last year at Indy was the Honda Aerokit, not the engine. This year, both Honda and Chevy are using a new, universal aerokit.
3. The new universal Aerokit is more similar to last year’s Chevy Aerokit than the Honda Aerokit. This theory is bolstered by the fact that the two top Honda teams (Coyne and Ganassi) have recent engineering experience with the Chevy Aerokit.

What about the race?

No matter what happened in qualifying, the question of the race remains. Examining Honda v. Chevy for the race breaks down like this...

I'd lean on the aero kit being the main difference. I hope the Honda engine has better FE over the race distance and allows them to run a bit lighter.

The advantage to fuel economy at an oval race is the ability to either:

1) run more miles at a higher power level.
2) run more laps in a stint

The effect of weight on an oval is minuscule.

As I mentioned, the fewer yellows there are, the more fuel economy matters. If there is a restart in the last 30 laps or so, fuel economy advantage could fly out the window.

What isn't being talked about is Honda agreed with Chevy that there will not be any major development on 2018 engine.(suppose to be same as 2017 engine).

Honda got burned!!!

Chevy now has more power than the Honda at the top-end......the first time since the beginning year of the 2.2L V6 formula. Also Chevy is now closer to Honda with MPG.Honda might now only have one lap advantage. In the past Honda had about 3 laps advantage.

Chevy-Ilmor has ALWAYS (since 2012) had an Absolute Top End advantage. ALWAYS. What's changed is how long they can get away with using it.

To match Honda fuel mileage Chevy has to cut back on power (engine, not Will).

Also, sources indicate that since the introduction of domed skid plates, the Honda super speedway aerokit had a measurable advantage in drag over Chevy. That showed up at Indy for 2016 and 2017. Of course, that is gone this year.

One more item: It will be REALLY INTERESTING to see how many laps everyone runs Friday. Monday, Power and Castroneves ran more than 100 laps (Newgarden had 87). So did the Ganassis.

Lots of teams had a lot less (Carpenter, Foyt, Andretti). keep an eye on tire wear. Watch live timing and scoring and see how the speeds change throughout a run.

The Chevy guys are complaining a lot more than the Honda drivers.
