I think one of the issues for the team is that since they lost Sainz and to a degree Kvyat they lost the benchmark for the car and its performance.
We don't know how quick Gasley is relative to the two aforementioned but we are pretty certain the amiable Hartley just does not seem to have the raw speed. A shame because he comes across very well and maybe offers the team good feedback, who knows.
But, it would be interesting to see what the car was capable of in the hands of a known quantity. I can only imagine the team are thinking much the same thing.
Their dilemma is to stick to their program and bring in a young hot shot but they are then left in the same scenario. Or go against the grain and buy in experience somehow.
If I was them I would be tempted to disguise Danny Ric at the test and see how he gets on .....
It would have been nice for Hartley to have a clean weekend, yet again he seemed on the cusp of finding a nice set up only to blow it at the vital moment. He has done enough racing to know that entering a corner as quick as the one he was about to was not the time to put his loaded outside wheel on the bloody grass !!
Ah well throw in a Canada spec engine and go for it, what is there to lose

Somehow Hartley just engenders sympathy, he does come across very well in any interviews, straightforward, and somehow seems like a nice bloke. Might be a nightmare in real life - how can we tell from 30s of TV interview, but if you were forced to put money on it, you'd go for "good guy".

He has a lot of experience, just look at his wikipedia page - he's won Le Mans, and won WEC _twice_ ! Just seems like he hasn't clicked with F1 yet. Some drivers come into F1 and are pretty soon at home, some (probably most) take a fair while to settle in. A couple of mistakes, on top of some lacklustre showings mean he does need a good showing soon-ish though.

Is anyone trying the OTT service? I read that they're using Sky for the race commentary so between that and ESPN being commercial free I'm not seeing a compelling case for it just yet.

Hartley reminds me a little of Michael Andretti. Michael was a good guy and a talented driver but he just didn't have "it". It's amazing to think that at any given time there may be ten drivers who can take the best cars and make them perform at a top level and no one can know for certain who is who until several races into a season. I guess the easy statement is WEC isn't F1 in any manner and I don't see any of the F1 teams watching Le Mans for new talent.

On another tangent, it seems like every driver has his Kryptonite. Hamilton and Vettel are the most complete drivers but they still get rattled at times and need the team talk in their ears. Hulkenberg is one of the best 95% Best drivers of all time. Bottas seems too clinical. Alonso seems like more of an odd duck with the more I watch him and read his interviews. He actually said yesterday that with his average finish thus far this season being six places ahead of where he has qualified he should be able to get 2nd place today.

Anyway, I'll give Hartley a pass for his crash due to him saying the corner target he missed is hidden beyond the crest of a rise in the track. It's the main reason I get nervous at the thought of doing a real track day. Hartley needs a solid finish today. Like 11th with the help of a few retirements.

Hartley's current pace could see him lapped twice depending on how his second set of tires perform. I'm curious now about going back to the TR data from testing because they weren't three seconds off the pace of the Mercedes drivers.

Did Hartley run out of fuel at the end? He finally came alive a little in the last ten laps and was ten seconds quicker than Ericsson over the last ten laps.

Good race if you like watching individual battles. The replay of the crash from Gasly's car looked like his left front hit the halo. Crazy.

I can't believe I'm typing this but I have to consider Hartley for my driver of the day. From last to 12th by avoiding problems and taking care of his car. His pace at the end of the race was decent mid-pack so he might have seen 8th to 10th with a solid qualifying if it had happened and Grossjean's car had gone in a different direction.

Red Bull has taken a step forward towards Ferrari and they lapped Alonso's McLaren. That's big.

He passed the finish line at a very slow pace (retired or? To change again his gearbox?) or real issue?

Not a good race on average for our boys, Pierre had no chance to succeed, Grosjean really make it all end soon...

Oh well, now onto Monaco... where grid position matters a lot, since overtaking is ridiculously difficult! Humm…schucks!

Looking forward to post-race testing on Tuesday and Wednesday and hopefully new spec power unit introduced in Canadian F1 race.

Let's up the game, very soon, Toro Rosso-Honda!

Another race of whats ifs...
Given Hartley's pace at the end I can only assume that Gasley could have had a relatively easy top 10 had he not come across the french man pirouetting in a cloud of tyre smoke.
I am hoping Hartley pushed hard at the end and ran out of fuel rather than a PU issue, fingers crossed.

Just to echo a few comments, HAR did put in a good drive all things considered. I really hope he just ran out of fuel as well and that these engines and gearboxes get them through Monaco so they can cleanly take the upgrade in Canada.

As for GRO, I wouldn't go so far as saying he's known for taking other drivers out but he consistently has a problem controlling *his own car* and this time it was particularly dangerous for others. If he bins it in Monaco and his teammate continues to do all the work, I'd say he'll probably be in Formula E next year.

At some point I will hope McLaren does well but I'm not there yet. After last year and what the team propagandists continue to say this year, they still need more of a reality check despite finally making a couple changes in Woking. Brown, Boullier, or both should go IMHO.

So they can change the gearbox of both cars and put a brand new one. Perhaps in preparation of Canada engine upgrade? Reliability is sufficient, they now desperately need to turn the wick on and get a better pace.
Hopefully they can successfully test the new spec engine this week (Tuesday and Wednesday)

Agreed Mikgtir. I hope they test the new engine spec.

Something to note, but they are putting Sean Gelael in Hartley's seat this week for testing. He has been their test driver since last year.

Someone on F1 Tech forums was at the session live streaming and had noticed Gelael was having trouble coming out of corners in sector 3 after the engine change.

He even spun the car on an ocassion and the car looked undriveable, almost having characteristics of too much power / low end torque. Hope this was the new PU that they're working the kinks out of now.

I had a giggle at Motohashi's [deputy Technical Director of Honda F1] politeness in regards to the "chassis issue".

https://twitter.com/HondaRacingF1/status/996435907757690880/photo/1?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fs9e.github.io%2Fiframe%2Ftwitter.min.html%23996435907757690880

A catastrophic oil leak from an oil radiator may well cause an issue with parts of the PU. :) Still they have an excuse to have an overnight look at the innards of the new stuff they're testing, which may be a good thing?

Mark Tatham, mechanical engineer in charge of the Toro Rosso since 2016, has been fired today.

Checking his linked in page, I was astonished to read that his consultancy firm did this :

Quote
Responsible for the design and development of the Energy Storage System for the Honda 2015 F1 Power Unit. The aim of this project was to create a ‘best in class’ system. The work initially involved recruitment of the design team, plus technicians responsible for assembly and testing activities. It has been a very technically challenging project, with an extremely demanding schedule, that has required liaison and coordination between many companies on a worldwide basis. New technology has been developed, with research conducted into many areas to prove innovative solutions prior to final deployment. A large amount of work has been undertaken to ensure safety, including comprehensive FMEA. There has been considerable cross-functional coordination with specialists in other parts of the McLaren F1 technical and commercial teams who have contributed to activities such as simulation, software development, CFD analysis, thermal analysis, power electronics development, production and assembly organisation, plus financial planning. The management of all of these activities has been under my remit. The system has now been successfully deployed in the McLaren-Honda 2015 F1 Car, meeting all technical targets set.
Unquote.

This is the weakest point of the Honda PU, they will introduce a new system in Canada (June).....

Hiring a guy that just delivered stuff to Honda was a good way to get infos on... Honda PU..???
