Indy 500 Test

Montoya, the 2000 Indy 500 winner, clocked the top lap of 226.772mph his No. 2 Dallara-Chevy while teammate and three-time Indy king Helio Castroneves was right behind at 226.468mph.

Marco Andretti was the quickest of the Honda-powered runners with a best circuit of 226.268mph in the Snapple Special.

Castroneves believes that the frontrunners will move into the mid-230mph range later in the month.

Practice times are looking pretty close. I'd say Honda has a fair shot at a win.

Speed seems to be right in the ballpark. If they still have a fuel efficiency advantage to go along with it it will be an interesting race.

Who do we think is Honda's best oval driver or team? Andretti I guess. Hunter-Rhey is the logical choice and defending champion. Marco is always good at Indy but I don't think he has the temperament for a 500 miler. Foyt just added Tagliani who is usually good there. What about Hinchcliff? Is he a dark horse?

I'd have to say Andretti Autosport is Honda's best chance. But maybe Bullwinkle will weigh in, he knows more about Indy than I do.

The Honda talent is pretty evenly split. I would rate them in this order:

RHR
Andretti
Wilson
Munoz
Tagliani
Sato
Rahal

The first four are Andretti cars and they have the best chance because they can try a lot of things and they have lots of oval expertise. RHR has obviously won, and the rest have done well recently.

Tagliani and sati have also done well recently.

I could not put everyone on the list. As to Rahal, his issue is that they only have two cars, and there are a ton of things to try in three short days. In addition to the new aero, there are new tires this year.

Andretti has the advantage there in that they will have five cars in the hands of five experienced drivers who can compare notes.

Foyt has three cars and two experienced drivers, so I rank that team second.

At SPM, Hinch is experienced, but Jakes has not driven Indy recently at all.

Anyone can win the race. I was asked about likelihood. And in my book any driver for Andretti has a better chance to win than any other Honda driver. Doesn't mean that Andretti will win, but the team's record at Indy is pretty good. Last year they had three of the top four and four of the top six?

My point is that they have a good "book" on the track. If A Honda wins the race, it will likely be one of Michael's.

Honda was looking good until today.

1)it looks like Chevy still has more power

2)Penske being Penske again by finding a loophole in the aero kit rules!!!!

Today it just look like HPD thought they was playing in a junior tee ball league with Ilmor and Penske playing in the big boy major leagues.

Agreed.

I would not be surprised if Chevy locks out the Fast Nine Saturday. Unless Honda has a surprise, like running without a rear wing.

As for the race, I think Honda is focusing on fuel mileage. In fact, I think the Wilson and Jakes blown engines today came when Honda was testing how lean and how hard they could run the engine.

Honda is better in the draft than Chevy.

So that gives them a good chance in the race but doesn't help during pole day.

It almost looks like Sato is running with no wing. I mean, it's their but it looks like it producing no down force.

The good news is there is something going on with the Chevy Aero Kit that isn't understood at the moment and the people in the know are not talking about it but might lead to what happen to the F1 race at Indy in mid-2000's......the kits are parked!

There was a lot less time for F1 to figure out a solution back then. With 2 weeks to go, I'm sure they'll get 33 cars on the grid.

At the moment Indycar has asked the Chevy teams to not use their Qual Aero Kit(MK 2).

The chevy drivers said it is fast but they couldn't race it for 500 laps without hitting the wall.

It seams all three of the Chevy Aero Kits are hard to drive.

They got approval this to run them Friday morning. However, not all are using them. Dixon is using the MKII Ramps while teammate Kanaan is using the road course side pods.

On the live stream, there was some talk that they some were using the long side pods on one side of the car only.

No word from IndyCar and they had security move the press from their office!

But the rumors.

1)Boost back to race level for qual(lose about 50hp)

2)Must race want you qual in(so chevy can't use there qual aero kit pieces and Honda will have to use the full three piece rear wing)

3)Must race in the same setup trim as qual

4)After all the problems(rule changes) during the week they might allow all 34 car to race(a first) instead of 33

I tend to agree, I certainly hope they got a concession from IndyCar to allow them to work on their road course kit in exchange for biting the bullet and being a good corporate partner.

Well Honda has a fuel economy advantages, plus the speed differential isn't as great when they draft. On the other hand, all of those Penske/Ganassi cars up front will be working together and the chances for a lucky yellow will be less than typical. So in short, I have no idea. I'm not optimistic.
