Honda just released 3/31/15 news about the Shanghai Auto show(press day 4/20/15).

A new SUV Concept.

It has a kinda Range Rover look with jewel lights.

Plus Honda Europe will invest 200m into Swindon to make it the global hub for the five door Civic!

Wow big news day.

That doesn't sound too good for Swindon.

Anyone wanna buy a factory?

That is interesting, thanks
I assume that all hatchback Civics in Europe already came from England, so this isn't referring to simply exporting them to Europe

Key global markets, hopefully that doesn't just mean China

I think the US and Canada will be the key market outside of Europe.
The golf is selling at 4k units a month in The USA. I am sure Honda wants that.
Good part is half those are GTI.

So 60k for Europe, 40 for NA, 10 for Australia, 5 Japan... And then that one production line is at capacity.

But what happens to the second production line? Specially if so many 2.0t drivetrains are made there?

this seems to amount to a complete reversal of Honda's previously declared policy of moving production facilities to the markets where they sell in order to protect themselves from the vagaries of exchange rates. Mexican HRV go to Europe, Euro Civics to North America, Canadian CRVs to Europe. That last one is curious as we in Canada are still getting all our CRV Tourings from Ohio and still can't get enough supply.

These are all related to Europe. Perhaps it doesn't make financial sense for them to build vehicles in Europe other than the hatch.

That's probably a good strategy of you sell enough cars to justify duplicating the tooling, which is very expensive.

Which Honda doesn't in the EU.

It makes more sense to invest in the CR-V tooling somewhere where there is a shortage (like Canada) and they can therefore sell enough of them and send the odd shipload to the EU.

I presume the BIW of the Civic hatch will be pretty unique aft of the B-pillar, which includes both the bodyside inner & outer pressing, so they're duplicating less. Therefore there ought to be sufficient world sales to justify investing in one plant (i.e. Swindon) which will also be its major market, at least short-term. RoW sales may increase with time and familiarity.

LOL. It's to hedge the inherent risk of producing in the UK which refused to join the Europe currency union (Honda was tricked to build the second line in the UK after the gov't promised of joining the Euro), and to shock proof in case the Brits are fool enough to vote themselves down the drain in a couple of years.

...well in the big markets (aka sell enough) that works.
But getting there is the chicken-egg issue.

start by importing to get enough volume, to get enough to off set the costs of local production, then you can produce locally.

Then you want to do that for the total line up...

Now what Honda plans to do with Europe is get these scale effects on the civic hatch at Swindon. Simple.
The interesting part is the cross - importing & exporting, which allows them to compliment the line up and avoid currency issues by essentially setting up their own barter system.

e.g. one CRV from NA = 1.1 Civic Hatches from Swindon.
Now Honda can set their own rules on this barter system regardless of currency issues.
They can take e.g. the profit contribution of a unit - in this case 10% more.
Or labor costs or any combo.

This news are very confusing. I don't see a good reason why Honda Europe should still be kept alive after their business-crippling behaviour and disastrous model policy. Sounds like an Aprils fools joke to me.

Apart from the loss of investment, it's very hard/expensive to close factories in EU.

A bit easier in the UK, but not much.

Also not good if you sell it to a more competent rival, either.

Simplest solution(!) is just to design a really decent Civic again.

Of course, that could be where the plan goes all Baldrick on them.

I'm sure Baldrick would plan on sending the US VIII Bomber Command to shut down those factories.

Clever and as effective as using a sledgehammer to crush a peanut.

Especially as they'd probably hit Mercedes-Benz Bremen by mistake.
