A friend has a Q7 TDI and loves the thing - I think it looks great and it seems like a great SUV. It's very expensive though and having recently damaged the right side outside mirror she learned the replacement cost will be $1700. That's just to remove the old mirror and install the replacement. The Q5 is obviously not as expensive to purchase and own as the Q7 and all luxury SUVs can be expensive but I believe the luxury German automobile is every bit as costly to own compared to other options as ever.

I totally dig it, but it seems really overpriced. Wish it was closer to rdx pricing.

Honda charges an arm and a leg for parts too.

I have not found that to be true, Picard.

Substance isn't cheap. The RDX no longer has a personality and the Q5 is available in many personalities. Q5 TDI, Q5 2.0t and the mighty SQ5.

I will give up a little personality for a car that will stay out of the shop.

Wow, Mitsubishi is in the second list.

What do they count as failure rate? Honda's 1 engine fail in 344 still doesn not seem very good imo or I am not understanding it correctly? I am expecting maybe like 1/1000 fail instead

It sounds like some of the issues reported may not have been a catastrophic engine failure.

"Warranty Direct’s study of 50,000 live consumer policies shows some interesting facts. Perhaps chief amongst them is that German manufacturers’ engine reliability isn’t exactly what it’s supposed to be - even for premium manufacturers…

Audi, for example, was the second worst “offender”, with 1 in 27 owners reporting an engine problem; the only manufacturer who did worse was the, now defunct, MG Rover with 1 in 13 – but then again, the British carmaker never had a reputation for reliability…

BMW’s MINI is third, with 1 in 40 vehicles having engine issues, while BMW itself is seventh and VW is ninth.

Warranty Direct also studied the cost of engine repairs. A Range Rover Vogue with an engine failure recently led to the insurer’s highest claim ever: £12,998.46 (US $20,642), while a dealer quoted £14,853.60 (US$23,588) to repair a destroyed engine on a Range Rover Sport.

On the other side of the spectrum, Honda was the clear winner with only 1 in 344 owners reporting engine troubles, followed by Toyota with 1 in 171, and surprisingly, Mercedes-Benz with 1 in 119."

You may be right considering the right side mirror on the Accord Touring may be just as expensive to replace. And it was accident damage and not a failed mirror on the Q7. My point was the Q7 is an expensive car to purchase, own and repair. The most expensive part I've ever replaced on any Honda product due to failure was a headlamp housing on the RDX and that was covered by the warranty. The truth for me is I very rarely need to buy replacement parts for Hondas and Acuras. I think the last part I purchased for the RDX was an engine air filter.

A colleague at work mentioned a month ago or so that his dad traded his Tiguan for a Lexus after the shift lever boot/surround became torn and was replaced under the VW warranty with a part list price of just under $500. The price for the part scared the fellow from owning the car after the warranty period. All cars can be expensive to repair.

With the German brands, it's not necessarily the engines that are the issue, but everything else they cram into the car. Audi's are known to be electrical nightmares as are Mercedes. One of my family members has a MB SL500 and it requires multiple batteries, which die with regularity, and you can only go to MB to get them. His power driver seat stopped working and it was nearly $3,000 to fix.

Plus, servicing is outrageous. There is no need to have their maintenance costs so high.

I guess if money is not an issue for you and you have no problem shelling it out, then go buy one. If not, then I would refrain.

If you lease, get Audi. If you buy and keep for a long time like your Accord, obviously Honda/Acura, especially for a SUV.

For a premium sedan, you might get a bigger nod for the Germans, just be prepared to pay more (while you do enjoy more).

For BMWs, follow the old school maintenance schedule.
