Why didn't they say it was class leading? It even has better mpg than other german diesels:

BMW X5 xDrive35i
2013: 16/23/19

BMW X5 xDrive35d
2013: 19/26/22

Audi Q7
2013: 16/22/18

Audi Q7 TDI
2013: 19/28/22

Impressive EPA numbers.
Its much higher than the newest JX.

MPG numbers have been one of the low-scoring items for MDX for a long time (besides 3rd row seat). Now that these are solved, I think this MDX will sell like hot cakes.

Lexus RX hybrid isn't a 3-row SUV thus different class

In addition to making less HP/TQ than almost everything on the field.

The RLX with the same engine gets 20/31/24. So the RLX which is a more aerodynamic lower sedan that's 300lbs lighter, the new MDX only trails the new RLX by 1mpg combined and 3mpg highway and matches it in city. Interesting!

Just imagine if they had offered the 370HP SH-SH-AWD which gets 30/30/30 on the RLX. Missed opportunity.

Maybe the 2014 Highlander which is 3 rows. Current one is 28 mpg combined and '14 should get better than this.
Also Q7 PHEV is expected next year but currently among non-hybrid large SUV models this certainly is class leading.

We asked the same question. Naturally folks were cagey about future product but someone did say that they engineered the MDX to be able to handle other powertrain options.

Whether that means hybrid, or even something crazy like a performance variant (which has been brought up), who knows. Maybe neither, maybe both. If I had to guess I'd say they'd build a hybrid MDX before they build a X5 M killer.

Within the 7-seater luxury segment, the Infinity QX-whatever SUV has a hybrid option for 2014 that gets 26 combined. It's also a CVT which must be real thrill to drive (sarcasm)

This keeps getting pushed back, I am wondering if there is something amiss with the Hybrid drive

If seating determined class, then a RAV4 with 2 rows would have a different class than the same CUV with the optional 3rd row.

In the case of the MDX and Lexus RX, both are classified as mid-size SUVs. You can divide that class into 2-row vs 3-row, or AWD vs 4WD vs 2WD. You can also break them up by traditional BoF vs monocoque. They're still classified as mid-size SUVs.

Furthermore, I'm guessing the numbers released at this time are manufacturer estimates, and not the official numbers being given to the EPA. We've seen those numbers change before.

Because its not a diesel.

According to Toyota's site, the 4cyl. 2WD only Highlander is rated for 20 City/ 25 Hwy. Meanwhile the V6 2WD is rated 18/24, and the V6 4WD is rated 17/22.

The Hybrid is rated at 28/28. They do not specify a combined rating on their site.

Off Topic: Toyota's "Build your own" section of their site is complete garbage. You can't see what you're building or the prices. All it does is direct you to dealer inventory, and asks you to "Submit" your build to a dealer so they can contact you.

The two Hybrids it found in my area were $50k and not even fully loaded. That's MDX territory.
