Performance arm? [View News Item]    (Score: 1, Normal) 02-22-2013 19:13

Does anyone else feel like Acura needs a "performance division" tuning each of their cars? It really seems to add a lot of appeal to a brand. I hear about AMG and M as much as I hear Mercedes and BMW. And Audi's S and RS models get tons of attention. Maybe these models don't sell that well - though I think they do relatively well - but the image boost to the whole brand seems invaluable. You can drive a base 3-series and still feel like you have some connection to the wonderful M3... even if it's merely the silhouette or just the Roundel.

Lexus seems to be trying to get in on the game with their F-sport, but it seems to be just small packages and individual parts and doesn't have the impact yet. Ditto Infiniti and its lame IPL. But with the big 3 Germans, the performance arms have almost taken on a life of their own, they are so extensive. I think that is important. Makes you feel like it's a whole different company that specializes in tuning, as opposed to just Honda making some stick-on plastic accessories for the Civic.

I thought of this when browsing the MB website, of all places. I noticed the "base" S-class is $95k, yet there is an AMG model which goes for $212k. (Which oddly has a 5-speed automatic.) Seems like there is a lot of profit to be had there. And obviously a big boost of image, never mind horsepower.

Perhaps Acura could use the S moniker, dropping the "Type" part. RLX-S. Maybe the benefit of adding that X to the end of all the names means that the performance version now sounds like "excess," which is fitting.
