Saw this at the DC Auto Show last week. I wasn't too impressed. Nothing about this car really stood out to me, and apparently nobody else either, as it was hardly noticed by anyone at the crowded event (not a good sign). The interior design looks even more pedestrian than in photos and the material quality was not much better than the ILX. I will say that the rear seating seemed much more spacious than the outgoing RL.

Maybe the fuel economy and new tech behind the RLX will be its saving grace, because otherwise I don't see the car doing much better than the RL it replaces.

I saw it there too, and frankly was pleasantly surprised to see it. I agree that I was a bit underwhelmed. While it is 100% Acura/Honda in terms of the way everything looked and felt, it does seem to be missing that wow factor. To make the matter worse, the car was placed in the back part of what I considered already a rather sparse looking Acura display. When I asked about this, the Acura rep indicated that they were suppose to get a turntable in the center of their floorspace to showcase the RLX, but that turntable somehow ended up as a second one for Lexus. Because of this, they had to scramble and come up with a contingency plan, and ended up in a much less prominent spot.

I think most opinions about the RLX will be heavily influenced by the expectations one has on what the new RLX should be. If one believes that a flagship needs to be pushed rather than pulled, and driven by no less than a 400+hp force inducted V8, that individual will not likely have a favorable opinion of this car. But if one sees what Acura/Honda has enbraced as its corporate modus operandi, then one might appreciate the ideas behind this new car and how it is executed.

Despite my initial impression, I think the RLX will holds its own against other cars that I saw/sat/touched in the same price/class range at the show. I believe it offers better value than any other comparable Japanese & American offerings, not to mention anything from Germany.

OK, that explains why it was off to the back. Seems like they would have made space for it in the middle of their floor space, since that little platform they had it on didn't really do much to make it stand out among the current line-up. Interesting how Acura got snubbed so that Lexus could have two elevated turntables. Hell even Honda had a more impressive display for the Accord coupe.

Anyway, you have a valid point in what you feel will/or won't motivate a consumer to purchase the RLX. It is value laden; however, so was the RL in retrospect. The main two things I feel held the RL back was its size and styling. Acura has addressed the size issue (especially in rear seating capacity) but the styling, while not offensive, is very forgettable. But hey, from the reviews I've read, it is a really fun car to drive. I guess time will tell.
