Engine Internals
Engine Block
  • lightweight die-cast aluminum block with cast-in place iron cylinder liners
  • liners bond to the aluminum to enhance rigidity and heat transfer
  • block has a deep-skirt design with 4 bolts per bearing cap to rigidly support the crankshaft
  • block assembly heat treated for greater strength

Crankshaft/Pistons/Connecting Rods
  • adjusted counterweight to account for the heavier high compression pistons used
  • pistons have taller reinforced crowns to reduce squish volume (the mixture trapped between the pistons and cylinder head)
  • raised compression ratio from 10.5:1 to 11.0:1
  • forged steel connecting rods are a carry over from the Type-S

Cylinder Heads / Valves
  • cylinder head has an integrated exhaust manifold which is part of the head casting (virtually identical head to 2003- Accord V6)
  • made of pressure-cast, low-porosity aluminum to lower engine weight
  • each cylinder head feeds directly into a close-coupled catalyst
  • three layer head gasket ensures positive sealing
  • Aramid fiver reinforced belts drives overhead cams

VTEC
  • at low speeds, Intake valves have low lift and open for relatively short periods of time during cylinder filling
  • at high speeds, valves switch to high-lift and long duration for high volumetric efficiency
  • VTEC crossover is at 4,700 rpm and takes 0.1 seconds
  • 3-rocker VTEC controls the 2 intake valves per cylinder individually unlike 2-rocker VTEC which controls both simultaneously
  • individual control of intake valves enable staggered valve opening and lift which promotes swirl for better air/fuel mixing
