Project Si - Friday Pre-SEMA Update

In less than 24 hours, TOV's Project Si will be making its way into the hallowed halls of the SEMA show in Las Vegas. We've still got a little work left to do, but I think we're going to make it.

Yesterday we spent quite a few hours at the facilities of Progress Group suspension for our coilover install. We had to spend more time than expected there because of fitment issues with our new wheels. While the Progress package fit fine with the stock wheel/tire package, and the beautiful SSR/Avon packages fit fine on the stock suspension, the two did not get along so well up front. Due to changes in the spring seat location with the adjustable coilover setup, and the dramatic increase in front camber we wanted for cornering grip, the spring seat and wheel lip wanted to occupy the same place at the same time.

We've temporarily solved the problem by using an 8mm spacer up front, and backing off the camber a degree or two from our current setting of -5 deg would also help. We thought about specifying a different offset wheel, but that would require rolling the rear fender lip (the new wheels and new suspension work perfectly at the back) and even then clearance would be tight. We'll probably just stick with a high quality spacer up front and a slight reduction in camber to about -4 deg. Progress is also going to see about getting creative with changing spring lengths and seat location to make life easier on the production pieces.

We also put on our new adjustable rear sway bar from A-Spec Racing. We test drove the car with it in the softest setting, along with our new springs and shocks from Progress. Even on our trashed Michelin Pilot Exalto tires, the transformation is amazing. Turn in is so immediate and grip is tremendous. There is a hint of oversteer on turn in, and just a hint of understeer at the limit on the power, but we should be able to dial that out with a stiffer setting on the bar. The front damping and spring rates are nearly perfect too. The rear needs a bit more rebound damping, but for a first cut at spring rates and shock settings, Progress got pretty damn close. When they've had time to refine the settings at the track with us, the car will be amazing. I can't wait to try it on race tires. We also found that with a quarter tank of gas, the car is down to 2780 lbs, a substantial weight loss.

Today we get the final installment of our cosmetic mods, with window tint from Western Auto Sounds and final decals from InStyle Graphics. We're also hoping that they can help us find a solution for the rather glaring silver rear license plate fascia. Like the rest of you, we don't like the way it looks. Maybe we can get a loaner black fascia from a local Honda dealer....

See you at SEMA!
