Will the 10th Generation Civic Type R offer a CVT? No.

Earlier today several people posted some links in our forums pointing to some speculative news items suggesting that Honda would be offering a CVT in the upcoming 10th Generation Civic Type R. This is not the case.

It seems that all of this sudden "news points back to a ~3-month old article that was published in Car Magazine (UK, November 2016 Issue 652)

Upon hearing this news, we were simultaneously surprised and a wee bit skeptical, so after a little research we tracked down the article from carmagazine.co.uk (it's not available on their website). This article was written some 2 weeks following the Paris Motor Show, where Honda revealed the 10th Generation Civic Type R prototype to the world.

As you can see in the paragraph quoted below, the article does make mention of a CVT:

(from pg. 67) "Doubtless power will continue to be transmitted by today's magical six-speed manual gearbox, with its tightly-packed ratios. There's no indication of a dual-clutch gearbox for the Civic: the announced automated option is a CVT, although engineer Kariya hastily adds that he's tried to head-off the typical rev-metal thrash by making the cooking engines tractable at low revs. Fair play, but enthusiasts will always want to wind out a Honda engine, despite the latest units having redlines pegged below the 8400rpm nirvana of Type R yesteryear."

It's easy to see how some (many?) folks might read the above passage (underlining and emphasis ours) and immediately think that the Civic Type R is getting a CVT.

But note that the way it is worded, it references an "announced" automated option for the Civic (not Civic Type R). Also note that there have been no announced automated options for the Civic Type R. That's because there won't be an "automated" option for the Civic Type R. It's unclear why this blurb would end up in an article about the Civic Type R, but for whatever reason, it did.

Just to be 100% sure, we reached out to American Honda spokesman Sage Marie (‎Senior Manager, Automobile Public Relations) earlier this afternoon, and he stated that the Type R will only be offered with a 6-speed manual transmission, as has already been announced. He confirmed that there would NOT be a CVT offered in the Civic Type R.
