What are the best tires for the 97+ SH? Right now mine has 16" 205 width Bridgestone Potenza RE92's (Stock I believe). Any recommendations of better brands?
I'm using the Bridgestone Potenza RE730 and are very happy for Summer tires. They get a little noisy after 50% tread wear. I've heard the Pole Position series don't have this problem, but probably wear a little faster. They stick so much better than the stock tires.
I relplaced my Potenzas with Yokohama’s AVS ES100 on my prelude. For normal city driving there is not much difference, but when you take them to windy mountian roads it feels like the car is glued to the road and no matter what you do you can not break it loose - which is good:) So if you just want to replace the stock tires then I would recomed these and they are lasting fine for directional tires. I figure they will last about a year and half - maybe more. go here for more info on them http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Yokohama&tireModel=AVS+ES100&vehicleSearch=true&partnum=05WR6ES100&fromCompare1=yes
Yokohamas are good. I also heard Toyo makes good tires. just check out the performance tires at tirerack like Preluder suggested. They have user reviews so you can read what people are saying about each tire.
I have a 2001 Prelude and replaced the terrible stock Bridgestone RE 92's with Toyo T1-S's. It should be noted that the T1-S are summer tires only. I've had them on my car for about 6 months now and I think the're exceptional. But they are not cheap. I got a good deal on them locally for $125 each.
The stock RE92 tires weren't bad for a Honda. Mine lasted about 28K miles. We put a set of same sized RE730s and WOOOOHOOOO it felt like a new car. Not only do they handle good and are reasonably quiet but they also look good.
We got the set for just over 500 bucks at Costco.. plus California taxes and what not. Since I live in Southern California, these are all year round tires.

I replaced the RE92's with the Pole Position S-03's and I love them. They have about the same noise level as the 92's did and handle the rain very well. I have about 8,000 miles on them and am expecting about the same life as the RE92's gave me. I'd go for the S-03's. Tire Rack sells them for around $125 a piece.
I think I'd rather sell the Prelude and get an S2K... At some point you just gotta realize that you can go nuts...
I ought to know. At one point I drove a 70 Datsun 510 sedan, with a 1.6 liter block, 1.8 SSS European head, Webber DGV top draft, tuned header, tuned intake, tuned exhaust, very heavy duty radiator, european SSS single point ignition, rebuilt transmision, competition clutch, heavy duty diff, competition springs, Konis, Pirellli P3s, ya name it... and the car was all primed on the outside with blue crushed velour seats (blame the previous owners...) and a thousand buck stereo. Talk about taking a 1000 dollar, 12 year old car and dumping some a thousands and thousands of bucks into it (this was 1983),

hey, careful who you're talking to here. I have a 1977 Datsun 280Z that I just dropped a ton of money on getting a turbo for, intercooler, boosting equipment, etc. I must have at least a $1000 in this car, plus the $440 Im spending on turbo equipment. And I still haven't even begun on my brakes and coilovers. And I do believe that I'll be able to knock the pants off any prelude in my neighbourhood with it, and probably most S2ks too. Well, maybe I'll have to wait on the new motor to take on the S2k...
Only $1000 bucks into the car? That's nothing.... get ready to dump another 5000..... And do you leave near the beach? I had to resand and reprime my old 510 every three months to prevent rust.
My 510 was worked on by a guy that owned a 260 (fastest of all stock Z's) with triple side draft Webbers. My little 510 would keep up with that Z up to 50. After that, his car would just keep going and going and going.
Otherwise, my 510 wold outrun stock 280s and 260s up to 100mph. 320is and the odd 2002tii were dead meat, even GTIs (This was in the mid 80s). ;-) They only car that was in my league, was a modified 2002i that I almost bought.

Well I noticed a degredation in wet traction just after 20k miles, it got much worse after 30k. I replaced them just before 40k and should have done it sooner. The RE92 had a tread rating of 160, the S-02 has a 140, but the S-03 has a 220. So from this, I would say they could last longer. Obviously it depends on driving style and conditions too. Either way the S-03's are awesome tires and I will replace them with another set when the wet traction degrades beyond my liking.
you should have put down a coat of that rust protector underneath. I don't know why you're sorry though, I love my Z. And when I'm done installing the turbo, this thing is gonna be insane. I'm prepared to spend $5k, probably more, a 7mgte is goin in when i get tired of this motor. And so far the Z has outlived the prelude, the lude is now up for sale, while the Z is just getting more money dumped into it. It's a money pit, but its too much fun to drive, so its worth it.
yeah I understand about money pits and cars. Enjoy it while you got no kids, huh? .. But don't you have an AT'd Prelude? You outta try the real one :-)
Besides, when you live less than a mile from the beach -as I did then- rust protectors are a joke. What I did with my 510 was to first cut off all the rust with tin snips (yep light metal allright), glassed the areas and then kept them well primed.
I was planning to paint it, but then I also had an Alfa Romeo and that bugger was always in the shop, so the poor Datsun was stuck as my everyday drive.

heh, yea I know, I really wish I had the chance to get a MT prelude, but my next car is gonna be a Celica All-Trac, so I guess I won't be getting a MT prelude. Oh well.
