Hey folks. Any of you mechanic types able to give me an idea of what might be causing steering wheel shake? My wife just called and was a little freaked that her steering wheel was shaking while driving at relatively high speed (50+mph). She also complained that the ride was a little rougher than usual, and that the symptoms are only present in the front of the car. She has a 2001 Civic EX sedan.
I have experienced similar problems in the past with other cars, but I forget what the hell it was. Basically, we just want to know what the problem is, and find out if it would be covered under warranty.
~unbalanced tire (we get this alot in canada when a chunk of ice freezes in the wheel) happens at high speed.
~warped brake rotor (from too much heat or damage) happens only when braking. you will feel the brake pedal kinda pulsing too.
~poor wheel alignment. (where the wheels are trying to go in different directions) youll notice this one at high speed too.
sounds most likely to be a lost wheel weight. check the rim for clean spots where a weight may have been. remember they can be on the inside as well. =)
good luck.
