Interesting article discussing the problems associated with using single number like horsepower or torque as an indicator of a car's "goodness." Having owned cars that rested on different ends of the horsepower/torque spectrum (Integra GS-R, Prelude SH, CL Type-S, and IS300, among others), I have to say that while I have enjoyed each of them for their own particular reasons, the torquier engines have been more exciting for the most part. While the GS-R was a great car, the B18C just could not compare to the Prelude's bigger engine--the rush of the H22A opening up at VTEC still gives me goosebumps. Likewise, the CL and IS, while heavier, are very satisfying to drive because of the available power delivery that comes with with larger engines.
Although I liked the H22, I found the B18C much more entertaining and eager. Sure, the H had more abundant torque but the sounds the B18C made during the VTEC switchover were just epic. That was just the start as when the secondaries opened things rally got interesting all the way to 8200rpm. Overall I found the B18C more engaging.
I have to agree I really like the H22A motor too. I'm thinking about swapping one in my accord. I really like a lot of Honda motors including the stock F22B1 Accord motor.
I have to say a stand out Honda motor I had fun with is the K24A2 in the 06 Acura TSX's I drove. This motor has good power and when VTEC kicks in it pulls hard. VTEC kicks in high at 7k rpms but the crossover on this motor is extreme. Look at a stock dyno chart for this motor and you will see a BIG RUSH OF POWER AT 7K! I think this motor has tons of potential.
