My seemless SIRIUS install    (Score: 1, Normal) 04-08-2006 19:15

Well guys after toying around with whether or not I was going to put a sirius in my car, I did. I purchased a Starmate and installed it at my job yesterday.

The car (SI) is pretty easy to run things through, but I do this stuff for a living so maybe not everybody will agree. I hardwired the unit to the cigarette lighter in the center console. In order to do this, I removed the console and made a plug out of male and female spades to piggy back the cigarette lighter harness, I didn't want to cut into anything for warranty purposes.
Here are some pointers:

-The console is a combination of clips (one on each side under the dash), several pressure clips (about 12 or so) which connect the shifter boot and panel to the upper panel just below the e-brake, and 4 screws (2 under the shifter panel and 2 in the console storage bin in the back). I also removed the driver underdash (1 knob to turn and 2 clips), the dash below the steering column (8 clips) and passenger underdash (3 clips).

Once the console was removed you can see the harness that plugs into the cig. lighter. Positive is Yellow and Ground is Black.

I ran all the wires through the pocket just below the radio. There is a panel that just pops out. I ended up grinding a small piece of this panel so I would have clearance to run the wires through (antenna, powere, fm out, and etc).

The antenna was mounted on the trunk. I fished the wire through the openings at the back. I then taped the wires to the factory wires feeding into the trunk. From there the antenna was easily ran behind some carpeted panels, under the rear seat and under the driver's side trim panels.

This is basically the jist of what I did, but I did simplify it a lot. The job took me about and hour and a half, I wanted it to be perfect since it was my car I was working on and not some customer's. I also plan on using the AUX input, but I am searching for a short cable at the moment.

If any body has any questions on how to put one in, I'd be glad to help.

Did you drill throught the trunk.
Intalled sirus and a kenwood keg, but I have been looking for a good place to put the antenna.

I didn't have to drill the trunk, I just placed the antenna on the outside and ran the the wire through the openings in the lid. I'll have to take pics of what I did tomorrow and post them for you.

Skully's skulls: I work at Best Buy in Mt. Laurel NJ, if you are interested. I guess you could say I am on of few good installers they have throughout the company, eventhough many people give them a bad rap. Yet, I don't want to take all the credit, my bro ( an installer at my job too) helped me out with it. It is kinda a two person job, if its done the way I did it.

What did you use to get the head unit out to edge of that pocket? I bought the Starmate as well but it sat so deep in the pocket that I took it backbecause it was so hard to read. It would be great to know what type of bracket you made or better yet bought, to move it out. Also you said you tapped into the aux plug in the console for power. Did you lose the ability to still use the outlet for other items? Does the unit turn off and on with the ignition or do you have to manually turn it on and off everyt ime you start the car or shut it off?

To respond to some of the questions:

I used a bracket from a Sirius sporster, not the sporster r. You could probably get one from sirius, I had an extra at my job.

The unit does turn on and off with the car.

I did find a 4" retractable cable, this was the shortest I could find. I'll post a link when I get home.

Thanks,

I am always worried about taking my dash apart and breaking the clips or something else, or even worse....getting rattles....has that been a problem with anyone?

No I havn't had any rattles before or after the install. If you take your time and have experience with how Honda's come apart (they haven't changed that much) you'll be Ok.

Heres the link for that cable I mentioned earlier:

IM really excited about this install, I am getting the unit today...as far as the hardwire to the cig ligther did you use something like this?

http://www.radioshack.com/search/index.jsp?kwCatId=&kw=male%20spade&origkw=male%20spade

And I noticed wires coming in through the driver's side in the trunk, is that the line you followed for the antenna?

I wish I could help you there, but I did the work at my job and I didn't have my Camera then. I did run the antenna down the drivers side. As far as the power, I used male and female spade terminals and some speaker wire to make a piggy back for the sirius power plug.

I may hardwire my escort radar detector soon, I'll take pics of that install since I will use the same power plug for power.

Oh yeah I used spades similar to what you linked. I just used non-insulated males (they will go into the factory harness) and female insulated spades to connect to the actual cig plug.
