I have an '00 Integra GS-R with 83,000 miles. When should I get new shocks / struts ? I heard a commercial that said 50,000 miles... but I bet they'd love it if everyone bought new parts every 50K miles!

Actually 50,000 miles is about right. Of course, you can certainly put more (I've 95000 on my '00 GSR), but a new set of shocks/struts would feel a whole lot nicer.

Your shocks should be all played by now. Some shocks will last 50,000 miles, some 30,000 miles, but I wouldn't wait to get new ones because a useless shock puts a lot of stress on the other components of your suspension. I generally change at 35-40,000 miles. My driving style wears out suspension parts faster than other drivers.
83,000 miles? Even with the most gentle driving, any stock shocks should be ineffective by now. You're riding on the springs, IMHO.

interesting...my 98 grand prix has 160000 miles on it and it still rides and handles well, better than my 01 civic (which had new struts last year!!! and now it feels like it's gonna need a new front pair pretty soon)

You've gotten used to the handling on your Grand Prix because shocks wear slowly and you don't notice the change in ride or handling. Hey, after 160,000 miles, drive it till it drops.

My 95 Accord has 150,000 mi on orig springs and shocks and it still rides very well just like your grand prix. So your comment means nothing. If your 01 Civic needs new shocks after 1 yr there is something else wrong with your suspension or you bought crap to replace the orig shocks or the installation wasn't done right or you just beat on your Civic compared to your grand prix. Don't come in here acting like your soft riding gm suspension is somehow superior to Honda. Honda suspensions are more perfomance enginereed and set than most brands - even a grand prix. My 90 Civic independent double wishbone suspension is more advanced than any current or past grand prix.

Also, you replace all 4 shocks at the same time, not just the front or back. I think you just like a softer suspenion like most consumers. That is what most companies do, including toyota, the Japanese version of gm. Honda and BMW engineer suspensions more towards perfomance as opposed to the no reponse engineering of Lexus/Toyota and gm.
