I own a 2002 civic SI, this car has a problem with the vtech solenoid which needs to be replaced, why? I have no idea since I have no knowledge on solenoid, my car is still under 65k,and just change the oil. What can a damaged solenoid do? because mine's not that bad, I only lose power or the car jerk at 5000 rpm on 4/5 gear. Can someone pls help explain to me? I really appreciate it. Thank you

It is listed as a spool valve in the calalog. It initiate vtec by opening an oil passage which the oil PSI lock the rocker arms in HI profile. check that there is enough oil 1st. 2nd check that the solenoid is ont damaged or coated in oil. Have the ECU scanned for stored codes. and let us know.

To elaborate on the last user's post...If you want your VTEC working...replace the solenoid.....if you don't care...unplug it's connector, you could end up damaging the VTEC system if you leave it crippled.

Thank you very much for replying, it is code 1259 from the dealer which is a V-tech problem, I was low on oil when that happened. I just had my oil change, my check engine light went away, but a friend suggested to check the code.In my opinion there's nothing wrong with the vtech now, I went to 5500 rpm on every gear, and there's no jerking at all.Do you guys think I am right or should I still change the solenoid (I am a little suspicious with the service guys)

Make sure you reset the computer (pull its fuse) just to ensure the code has gone away completely....Sounds like it was just low on oil pressure which would cause that code...You're fine as long as the same code doesn't resurface.

to the creator of this thread, it is V-TEC not "vtech"
yeah, i wish owning a nice car had to do with how much you know, not with how much money you have, or your parents have.

to the last comment before me:
It is VTEC not V-TEC... people very commonly assume that VTEC stands for V-Technology, but it stands for variable Valve Timing and lift Electronic Control....

It appears your VTEC is fine now. VTEC doesn't work unless you have sufficient oil (more specifically, oil pressure). If the car isn't hesitating at all up to redline, when it has before, your car is probably fine. If you're really paranoid, you can probably take the car to the dealer to replace the solenoid (im assuming you have no auto knowledge)

Good to hear that it is ok but remember to put 5 quarts of oil in it at every oil change. Bryan had his d16y8 blew cause of low oil and his only symptom was no vtec.
