1993 Honda Civic with 290,000 miles on it. Runs great until I turn on the A/C. When sitting at idle, when the compressor turns on the engine almost dies, then the compressor tuns off the idle returns to normal the compressor turns back on and the engine almost stalls (cycle continues). What could be the cause of my problem?? Cleaned the idle control valve, tried setting the idle with idle adjust screw, but that didn't help. Just as added info. recently replaced bad distributor, but problem with A/C and low idle was occcuring prior to new distributor replacement. Bought this baby in 1993 brand new, best car I have ever owned BAR NONE!!

Did you disconnect the IACV when the idle was set? Does the engine compensate for other power consuming items like the headlights and heater fan?

Yes, I disconnected the IACV before adjusting the idle. I don't notice any compensation from the engine when other power consuming items are turned on like lights, heater fan etc. If it does, it is so slight that I don't notice any change in rpm.

I am not an expert on this and have not worked on Civics. My cars are Integras. The troubleshooting guide for the integra indicates that your problem is caused either by a bad A/C signal or problems with the IACV. You have had no fault codes so that would make the IACV second priority. Unfortunately to investigate the A/C signal, you need a test harness for the ECM. If you want, I can send you a PDF file containing the five or so diagnostic pages for a 93 Integra. That may give you some insight. Let me know and I can send it you your email account.

Thanks for the info., however, I have the wiring diagrams and pin outs for the ecm test harness for my civic. I don't have a test harness though. I'll have to try and find one on the net and hope it isn't to pricey

Just an update: I pulled the ECM and checked the connections. No obvious signs of corrosion or dirt on the pins, however one of the three had an oily film on the connector and the other two were dry. Not sure if the film was a protective grease or not? Anyone know?? Anyway I disconnected and reseated the connectors a couple of times just in case there was a dirty contact. (especially the A/C signal wire). Re-installed the back up fuse. Now at idle with the A/C on the rpm's increase sighlty ahead of the compressor engaging and then they settle to a normal idle. Looks like that fixed my problem.
Thanks Oldguy for steering me in the right direction.
