Jeff, any word yet on all other makes using this new standard, or is AHM the only one doing the right thing.

Adopting the new SAE standard is voluntary. At this time we know GM, Honda and Toyota have adopted it. Since it is not mandatory, some automakers may choose to stay out.

Does anyone know a specific example of a bigger downgrade than the TL ( aloss of 12 HP??) Does this effect engine running on premium more than those designed for regular gas?

I wish Nissan & BMW would adopt these, I would love to see how it effects their engines.

To clarify...the horsepower rating has changed. The amount of power is actually still the same. Just like referring to the temperature in Farenheit and then is Celcius. The number is different but the temperature is the same.

making the same power, but the engine in the 2006 TSX was tweaked so it's now producing more power -- exactly how much is hard to tell.

I am thinking the RLs power must have gone up too then because it only lost 10hp compared to the TLs 12

This new standard is going to have different effects on the HP numbers on different cars/engines. The fact the HP value for the TL went down 12 while the RL only went down 10 doesn't mean the RL engine was tweaked -- I bet it's exactly the same as it was.

J1349 is not new, and the revisions shouldn't make much difference. GM is adopting an additional voluntary standard for third-party certification, normally resulting in higher output figures (GM is notoriously conservative). Must European manufacturers, including Honda Europe, use the ECE 85 standard (the same as EEC 80/1269), replacing the older DIN 70020 still used in Japan which does not specify normal engine accessories such as cooling fans and oil, water and fuel pumps. The ECE/EEC standard is calculated at more favorable temperature and pressure than the SAE, giving slight improvements for most engines (reduced for turbocharged engines which create their own artificial temperature and pressure).

What has happened in the past is that import manufacturers in the US have been slack in converting their domestic test results in DIN or EEC standards and often metric hp (PS) to the SAE standard and US hp. Honda and Toyota by and large have simply reported the Japanese test results in DIN PS as SAE hp without any corrections at all, as does Hyundai with their Korean figures. BMW simply converts EEC metric hp to US hp, without correcting to the SAE standard (much more difficult). VW often doesn't even bother to do that, simply reporting EEC PS as SAE hp.

This is the real reason for the big change in reported output for these engines. If you are unhappy with the "apparent" drop in hp you may have legal recourse under your state fair trading laws as the previous DIN PS figures were miss-stated as SAE hp in American Honda's sales literature, which is why both Honda and Toyota are being quiet about the changes.
