I was doing a search for the J1349 changes and found that the Civic Hybrid information released last month contained HP and torque ratings using the new system. 115hp/135lbft for that car. It seems the changes in the procedures for 2006 and beyond models usually is between 5-15hp less than before. So, considering that, the new Civics, including the Hybrid, will all be making even more than assumed if we think about them relative to previous SAE standards. That 140HP number for the Civic is probably more like 145-150 using last years SAE procedures. And the 200HP Si might even be a 210HP.

This is all speculation of course, since only a few of those numbers are even confirmed (Hybrid only, really -- Si I guess too, but no info on the procedure used).

But even as speculation, I thought that it was very interesting.

Not sure if the new ratings are using J1349 document, but the loss isn't a standard 5-15 HP off. More like 4-5% off the old standard.

What Wizard said, and the Si rating of 200HP was using the "old" SAE rating. Expect ~197HP with the new rating.

This is pure spin and obfuscation. American Honda has been less than rigorous with hp testing in the past. For many engines the quoted figures were actually Japanese-market DIN metric hp (1 PS = 1.01387 hp). In contrast Honda Europe has been far more strict in testing engines using the newer EEC/ECE standard, giving much lower figures for the same engines. Judging from the latest release the figures for the new Civic engines may have been estimated to the EEC standard (final official figures may be slightly different). In contrast the SAE standard is calculated at a lower pressure and higher temperature, producing a slight loss in power compared to the EEC standard, although many European manufacturers don't bother making the adjustment.
