I'm wondering why Honda has such plans when F1 has to change to V8 from next year on. It's waste of money either. They should make a V8 who is also usable for Pilot, MDX, Ridgeline and RL
Honda is already making a V8. in another post, Jeff said there were rumors of Honda testing a V8 in the RidgeLine, and that the RL will be the first to be fitted with the V8. i guess the V8 will be out in a couple years? hopefully it will. the RL and RidgeLine could use it (if for nothing else, to quiet the "it needs a V8" whiners), as well as the next MDX. Pilot maybe.
Because V10 is the best compromise between compactness and lightness of V8 and power of V12 - in road cars it should still be the case however F1 would change into V12 if not Mad Max.
Other thing is F1 would stick to V10 (the max no of cylinders now) if they were not approaching 1000bhp already. Extending engine life did not accomplish the target of reducing V10 power to the extent that would be satisfactory and is on the limit of reasonability. The powerplants stay relatively the same hp-wise and it is hard to imagine an engine lasting...the whole year in F1.
F1 reduced the engines to V10 while they (manufacturers - Honda.Toyota and Ferrari) had already V12 in works as they were compact enough, light enough while more powerful than V10 (F1 engine size and weight is a way different than in road cars for obvious reasons). BMW and Mercedes pointed it will cause cost increase and that was why MM decided to step in and put 10 cylinders limit. Development however made the engines to be so powerful that V8 was just a question of time. And So we have them. Who knows...maybe future holda V6 config for us in F1....

Where did you see that Honda was making a V8? Please post a link. Thanks.
I think you both make a good point. We do not know the future of GPWC or if JGTC will attempt to expand to a global series. F1 may be a second thought 5 years from now. Honda(NSX) and Toyota(LF-A) might be preparing for the growth of one or both of these other series using existing F1 V10 research as their starting point.
