Someone did well inside Honda. This is a no lose proposition for Honda right now and helps them better stake out the position of safe car maker. Now if they could just make a little more noise on fuel economy and emissions...

Agreed, the outstanding effort to make Hondas safer should be displayed proudly. Honda has really put forth a tremendous effort (at great cost) raising the bar in the process. With the bar raised, why not force the others the come up to their levels. Honda's investment is a win-win strategy. Hondas consumers win (safer cars), dealers win (sales strategy), HMC wins (higher sales).

Certainly a no lose for Honda and will generate a few good headlines for them. Great voluntary action by Honda. I did find this sentence funny, however, from Sen. DeWine...

"Honda has shown again today that it is willing to innovate and take voluntary action to protect the driving public."

Not quite sure how posting gov't crash data on a window sticker is going "to protect the driving public.". Nice spin Senator, but I kinda think Congress has a little bit more important things to worry about than mandating through federal legistlation this info. by manufacturers.

Then again, I guess you could get some fancy lawyer who may eventually sue Honda on behalf of a client because it wasn't posted. Wow... to cynical today, I guess.

Senator DeWine just happens to be from Ohio (US headquarters of HMC). This measure will never pass the Senate as GM & Chrysler currently are lagging in safe designs. Brand new Cobalt only gets 2 stars for side impact and that's an improvement from the 1 star Cavelier.

I think is the guy on the Honda block: John Mendell.

I'm expecting great new things from him.

Editor at the Motley Fool did a little research to see just where Honda ranks, here is an except:

According to The Wall Street Journal report on Honda's initiative, no Honda currently scores less than four stars. While that's not entirely accurate -- the 2005 Honda Civic two-door actually scored three stars for front side impact -- it's pretty close to the truth. After scanning the NHTSA's ratings page, I came up with the following data:

Counting by categories (five per car), rather than by separate cars, and considering the most representative brands for each of the Big Six automakers in the 2005 model year, Honda is indeed the best by far, with just the single three-star rating. Nissan (Nasdaq: NSANY - News) was second best, with four three-star ratings and a single two-star. DaimlerChrysler's (NYSE: DCX - News) Chrysler unit and Toyota Motors' (NYSE: TM - News) Toyota brand were tied for third place, with six three-star ratings apiece. Detroit's two favorite sons, Ford (NYSE: F - News) and GM's (NYSE: GM - News) Chevy, brought up the rear. Ford was tagged for 13 three-stars and a trio of two-stars; Chevy, for 20 three-stars, a pair of two-stars, and a pair of one-stars (ouch).

And in case you're wondering how the eternal standard bearer for automotive safety did, Volvo -- which Ford now owns -- did exactly as you'd have expected it to do, scoring not fewer than four stars in any category. But the Swedes had better look out: Honda is breathing right down their necks now, and by later this year, it's going to be awfully hard for auto shoppers at Honda outlets not to notice.

DeWine- hardly an unbiased guy being from Ohio and all :)

This is a brilliant move on Honda's part, after all- they earned the crash ratings, why not show them?

If they can reinfuse the sport and performance quotient back into their cars, they'll be back at the top.

I totally agree with this methodology. Honda is investing money in making cars cleaner, safer, and more fuel efficient. I would market the hell out of all those items. But even with all of this you are still going to have the same crowd that buys and explorer just because it is made in america. Not knowing that most hondas have an extremley high content of domestic parts, and most improtantly are put together by our workers too. I still can't figure out why anyone would put their hard earned money into a ford when there are better alternatives. I guess this is the same reason I see people with Tahoes that are always riding by themselves and never have anything to tow.

That article is outdated.

Honda currently has 6 vehicles that have received complete 5 star safety ratings. The civic coupe with side airbags is one of those 6. If you are so cheap that you won't spend the additional $250 to buy the coupe with side airbags then that is the consumer's problem, not Hondas.

The other 5 vehicles are: 2006 Ridgeline, 2005 Odyssey, 2005 Pilot, 2005 CRV, and 2005 Element. The Accord is close, but only has a 4 star rating for rear passenger (still beats the Camry which is rated at 3 stars).

Hope this helps.

What goes beyond me is why offer civic as a separate trim with only difference being side airbags. It me it is just pure stupidity. They want safety for all; do not make such stupid option/trim level. Probably it costs them more to make two separate trims than it would just to include the damn side airbag in every civic. But that is Honda – what is logical to the masses, no always it is to the Honda.

You would be suprised how many people opt for the coupe without side airbags because they want to save $250. Some consumers also have serious apprehensions about airbags, don't ask me why, there is just a stigma.

Honda does the smart thing by offering both Civics.

Very true. Also, the safety for everyone is being implemented within the next year or so throughout all of Honda's vehicles. With the Civic, the 2006 will receive full implimentation of the safety for everyone campaign.

As a Salesperson for Honda, how much do you feel the new sticker will contribute?
How does safety rank as a consideration in buying a Honda? For example will the Accord's higher safety rating sway many from buying a similarly priced Camry?
