When is does the VTEC changeover occur in the 2.4L. I can't seem to hear exactly when it occurs. My friend's Prelude is obvious, but this Accord 2.4L is a lot more subtle.

Well its alot easier to hear the VTEC in the H22 Prelude because the VTEC is on both the intake and exhaust cams. The Accords VTEC is only on the intake cam. Plus the extra sound deadening in the Accord make it alot quieter the Lude.

I've never noticed such a change in my '03, either. Don't quote me on this, but I believe I read an article in Car and Driver last year about this time before the '03's came out that said the 2.4-litre engine has infinitely variable cam lobes that allow the valve-timing to switch gradually from low- to high-intake/exhaust. I know for a fact that the 2.4-litre has hydraulically-adjusted valves that do not require adjustment (as opposed to prior Honda engines which required adjustment). Anyway, all that would explain why there isn't an obvious change in timbre of the engine/exhaust sounds when VTEC "kicks in."

Actually, it almost sounds like there is a 3-phase VTEC in the engine. It is much more obvious with the Injen CAI. around 2500-3000 there is a definite change in tone on the intake, then again at about 5000-5500 rpm.. hope this helps.

From what I heard, the 2.4L has VTEC (the two cam lobes technology) on the intake side. This is a definite 'one or the other' type of adjustment. This affects the aggressiveness of the intake valve opening (the valve opening depth and intake vs exhaust overlap). I think the i in the i-VTEC means that the timing of the engine can be 'intelligently' varied (cam retarded or advanced vs the pistons/crankshaft). I beleive that this adjustment is continuously varied based on a few different factors.

I also know that we have drive by wire throttle, so I am also curious of whether the ECU varies where it places the VTEC changeover point based on the throttle, RPM, and other factors. This could make 'looking' for the VTEC difficult - because the point could move based on a few different factors!! It might be a little naive to think that the system is this advanced, but hey, making mistakes is a good way of learning...

The 2.4L Accord does not have drive-by-wire throttle. This is reserved for the V6 model.

Neither the 2.4L nor the 3.0L engine has hydraulic lifters. You must adjust the valves the old-fashioned way...

Hmmm, you are right about the drive-by-wire. Under the hood I see the old fashioned cable for the throttle...Not sure what made me think that they all had basic drive-by-wire. I'm glad you pointed that out, thanks.

I am not sure why you mentioned hydraulic lifters. Is there usually some relationship between having hydraulic lifters and drive by wire or VTC or VTEC?

I wonder if there is anything in the service manuals for the 2.4L that indicates how to test the VTEC operation that might hint at what RPM it should kick over at during wide open throttle? Anyone with a service manual care to take a peek for us?

Uhm, a service tech. at a Honda dealer specifically told me that my 2.4-litre engine in my '03 Accord has hydraulic valve lifters and that they cannot be manually adjusted. Where are you getting your information?

IVTEC works differently depending on the model. In the CRV,Accord, Base RSX, Civic Hatch IVTEC only operates on the intake valves. These engines essentially only use one intake valve per cylinder. The other is opened just a crack. Enough to keep fuel from pooling behind the valve. The I in IVTEC stands for VTC(Variable Timing Control) This cam phasing system changes the intake cam plus or minus 30 degrees of timing depending on load

I hope he doesn't work in my shop...

Anyway, the link below outlines the entire maintenance schedule, in Canada, for the 2003 Accord 2.4L. Scroll to near the bottom, you'll see "specific additional required maintenance" items listed there.
